At a glance
- Years: built from 2017, facelift from 2021. The 2018 and 2019 model years are covered by the rear seat belt recall.
- Main risk: the DQ200 gearbox judders or jerks when pulling away. A mechatronic repair can cost up to 2,800 EUR.
- Reliability: 3/5, because the gearbox is the costly weak point.
- DIY: 1/5, because the gearbox repairs go to a specialist workshop.
- Prefer: a car with proof of the free seat belt fix and a gearbox that pulls away smoothly. Avoid: a car that judders or jerks when pulling away, and a 2018 or 2019 car with no record of the seat belt fix.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.0 MPI petrol (65 or 80 PS): no common fault confirmed.
- 1.0 TSI petrol: engine details are in the EA211 guide. The DQ200 gearbox below is fitted with it.
- 1.5 TSI petrol (150 PS): Evo engine with cylinder deactivation. No common fault confirmed.
- 2.0 TSI petrol (200 or 207 PS, GTI): EA888 engine. No common fault confirmed.
- 1.6 TDI diesel (80 or 95 PS): EA288 engine. Its EGR valve needs attention at high mileage, see EGR valve on the 1.6 TDI.
- Manual gearbox (5- or 6-speed): no common fault confirmed.
- DQ200 seven-speed dry DSG: fitted with the 1.0 TSI and 1.6 TDI. Judder is covered below. See the DQ200 guide.

Before you buy
- DQ200 gearbox. On a test drive, pull away from a stop and change gear. Bad result: a judder, jerk or clunk when pulling away, or gears that jump. A new clutch costs 1,400 to 1,800 EUR and a mechatronic repair 1,800 to 2,800 EUR (Germany, year not stated).
- EGR valve on the 1.6 TDI. On a high-mileage car, ask for proof that the EGR valve was cleaned or replaced. Bad result: no record of the work. The job costs 380 to 720 EUR (Germany, year not stated).
- Rear seat belt recall. Ask a dealer whether the free rear seat belt fix was done. Bad result: no record of it. Until it is done, do not use the rear middle seat.

In detail
DQ200 judder and mechatronic unit
The dry 7-speed DSG (DQ200) judders or jerks when pulling away. Gear changes can be rough or late, come with a clunk, or the gears can jump.
Two causes are named. The first is a worn clutch pack, the friction plates that connect the engine to the gearbox. The second is a fault in the mechatronic unit, the gearbox control unit that works the clutch.
Repair prices: a new clutch costs 1,400 to 1,800 EUR, and a mechatronic repair by a specialist costs 1,800 to 2,800 EUR (Germany, year not stated). After the repair the workshop must run a basic setting of the gearbox.

Rear seat belt buckle recall
The rear left seat belt buckle can open by itself. This happens when the rear middle seat and the rear left seat are both occupied, for example in a quick lane change with five people in the car.
The fix is a redesigned belt lock fixture. In Austria it is a spacer fitted to the double buckle. The fix is free and done at a Volkswagen or authorised workshop. Until it is fitted, do not use the rear middle seat.
Recall scope: Austria, 9,961 cars, model years 2018 and 2019. South Africa, 8,367 cars. No recall reference number is given in the sources.

EGR valve on the 1.6 TDI
The EGR valve feeds some exhaust gas back into the engine to cut emissions. On the 1.6 TDI (EA288) it can clog at high mileage and then needs cleaning or replacement. The job costs 380 to 720 EUR (Germany, year not stated).

| Worldwide, except India | not given | Model year 2018 | Redesigned belt lock fixture, free, at a Volkswagen service facility |
Maintenance
- DQ200 gearbox: the dry clutch has no gearbox oil change, so there is no fluid service to check.
