At a glance

  • Years: 2024 onward, with 1.5 eTSI, 2.0 TSI, 1.5 eHybrid and 2.0 TDI engines. The car is new, so long-term reports are few.
  • Reliability: 2/5. A UK survey ranked it last of 76 family SUVs, with a score of 64.2%.
  • DIY: 1/5. Software updates need a workshop, not an over-the-air update, and most faults need a scanner.
  • Biggest risks: infotainment and assist software, emergency braking without a reason, and the 12 V battery.
  • Prefer: a car with the latest software and a dealer record of it, and a clean recall check by VIN (the chassis number). Avoid: cars with stored faults, a flat battery or an open recall.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.5 eTSI (DXD): 130 or 150 PS, 48 V mild hybrid, 7-speed DSG (a double-clutch automatic), front drive. Engine faults are in the 1.5 TSI evo guide.
  • 2.0 TSI (DNN, DNP): 204 or 265 PS, 7-speed DSG, 4Motion (all-wheel drive). No engine guide linked yet.
  • 1.5 eHybrid (DUC): 204 or 272 PS plug-in hybrid, 6-speed DSG. No guide linked yet.
  • 2.0 TDI (DXP, DXN): 150 PS front drive and 193 PS 4Motion, 7-speed DSG. Engine faults are in the 2.0 TDI EA288 guide.
  • DQ381 wet DSG: on the 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TDI. See the DQ381 guide.

Before you buy

  1. DCC Pro dampers: Drive a rough road at low speed, in Comfort and in Sport. A bad result is a thump from the axles, a knock over small bumps or a clunk over potholes. Ask the dealer for the damper and software history. Look at the suspension struts for leaks on a lift. A scanner reads the fault memory.
  2. Infotainment: Spend ten minutes on the screen: menus, navigation, phone pairing, CarPlay, the reverse camera and the heated steering wheel. A bad result is a freeze, a blank screen or no camera image in reverse. A scanner reads the fault memory.
  3. 12 V battery: Leave the car to stand overnight, then start it and check for warning lights. A bad result is a flat battery or a set of warnings. Excessive current draw (power used while parked) needs a scanner or a workshop check.
  4. Emergency braking: Reverse out of a parking space next to a kerb, then drive a few minutes in town. A bad result is the car braking with no obstacle. Ask the dealer for the software version and whether the VW bulletin steps were done. A scanner reads the version.
  5. Seat height lever (UK cars): Check the VIN for this campaign. A bad result is an open campaign. Until it is done, do not use the front seat far back and low down.
  6. Open recalls: Check every VIN with a VW dealer for open campaigns, including the steering screw campaign 48VS. A bad result is an open campaign that has not been done.

In detail

Infotainment freezes and dashboard software faults

The screen flickers, freezes or goes blank. The car can lose its navigation, radio and air-conditioning controls. Dashboard warnings can light up within days of delivery. In one press test the rear camera image did not appear in reverse, the heated steering wheel would not switch off and CarPlay dropped out.

Most of these faults are software. A VW bulletin covers multiple assist warning lights. Owners were told to try a software update first. A unit may need replacing if that fails.

To reset a frozen screen, hold the screen power button until the VW logo appears. This takes at least 10 seconds. The real fix is a software update in a workshop, not over the air. Some updates did not cure the fault, and a further visit can be needed.

Cost: no confirmed price. On new cars the work is done under warranty.

Emergency braking without a reason

The car brakes hard with no obstacle in front. Owners report unwanted braking when reversing out of a garage or car park, where a kerb sets off an emergency stop. In a UK long-term test, the brakes were applied several times for no reason while reversing onto a driveway. Front assist (the system that brakes for obstacles) can also kick in at random.

The cause is not stated. VW has bulletins for unwarranted automatic emergency braking. Another bulletin covers Travel Assist (lane and traffic assist) switching off after a brake jolt warning. A software update fixes that part.

Dealers follow the VW steps for unwarranted braking. No repair price is confirmed.

Seat belt risk from the seat height lever

The protective felt on the seat height lever is faulty. In a front crash the seat belt can catch on the lever and tear. The recall covers Tiguans built in May 2024, in a limited build period. It is a UK campaign with 337 vehicles, launched on 19 December 2024 (DVSA R/2025/004, manufacturer ref 72DV).

The fix is a new protective felt on the lever. Until it is done, do not use the front seat in a seat position that is far back and low down.

Cost: not stated.

12 V battery drain

The 12 V battery goes flat after the car has stood. Owners report warning lights first, then a dead battery, within weeks of delivery.

A VW bulletin links the drain to software. The engine control module (ECM, the main engine computer) can stay active after a diagnostic check. The battery then discharges slowly while the car is switched off. The bulletin is titled "Diagnosis for Excessive Current Draw". The fix is an ECM software update.

Cost: no confirmed price.

DCC Pro thumps and knocks

DCC Pro is the adaptive damper system. It comes as standard from 150 PS, so not every car has it. Owners report a thump from the axles in Comfort mode, and a light knock over small bumps at up to about 50 km/h. Potholes bring a clunk and thumping, most of all in Sport mode. The cause is not stated. The fix is not confirmed. Dealers have changed rear dampers, and owners report mixed results. A VW bulletin explains how to find a leaking suspension strut and when to replace one, so check the struts for leaks.

Cost: no confirmed price.

Maintenance

  • Software: At each service, ask for the software version and the update history. Updates are done in a workshop.
  • 12 V battery: Have the battery and the current draw checked if the car stands for days. The VW bulletin ties the drain to software.
  • Struts: Check the suspension struts for leaks at each service.
