Before you buy this car
From the generation guide
- DCC Pro dampers: Drive a rough road at low speed, in Comfort and in Sport. A bad result is a thump from the axles, a knock over small bumps or a clunk over potholes. Ask the dealer for the damper and software history. Look at the suspension struts for leaks on a lift. A scanner reads the fault memory.
- Infotainment: Spend ten minutes on the screen: menus, navigation, phone pairing, CarPlay, the reverse camera and the heated steering wheel. A bad result is a freeze, a blank screen or no camera image in reverse. A scanner reads the fault memory.
- 12 V battery: Leave the car to stand overnight, then start it and check for warning lights. A bad result is a flat battery or a set of warnings. Excessive current draw (power used while parked) needs a scanner or a workshop check.
- Emergency braking: Reverse out of a parking space next to a kerb, then drive a few minutes in town. A bad result is the car braking with no obstacle. Ask the dealer for the software version and whether the VW bulletin steps were done. A scanner reads the version.
- Seat height lever (UK cars): Check the VIN for this campaign. A bad result is an open campaign. Until it is done, do not use the front seat far back and low down.
- Open recalls: Check every VIN with a VW dealer for open campaigns, including the steering screw campaign 48VS. A bad result is an open campaign that has not been done.
From the engine guide
- 48 V system (scanner). On an eTSI, read the 48 V fault memory and warning history. Bad: stored codes, stop-start off, or a recent battery or starter-generator invoice.
- Recall check. Enter the VIN in the official recall check. Bad: an open 24ER, 24EV or 24EP campaign.
From the gearbox guide
- Fault scan (needs a scanner). P17BF, P189C, P1895 or P0841 mean a pressure fault, usually the accumulator housing. Get a repair price or walk away.
- Pump test. Ignition on, engine off. The pump should run briefly and stop. A pump that keeps whirring points to the accumulator.
- Oil. Look at the gearbox and the undertray. Wet oil can mean a mechatronic job.
- Control unit signs. Ask about a flashing gear display, a blown gearbox fuse, or the car losing drive at a stop.
- Clutch values (needs a scanner). Read remaining clutch travel and the adaptation counters. Counters that will not adapt, or very low travel, mean a clutch job soon.
- Road test in 6th and 7th. Full throttle from 1,000 and 1,500 rpm. Engine speed that swings by up to 200 rpm means a worn clutch. Also feel for judder pulling away.
- Reverse, cold and warm. A flashing R, no reverse or a crunch is bad.
- Cold start. A rattle for 5 to 10 minutes, or in 2nd on overrun, points to the flywheel.
- Paperwork. VIN check for open recalls; for 2008 to 2013 cars, proof of the 2013 oil change; invoices for any mechatronic repair.
