At a glance

  • Years: the hatchback was built from August 2012 to November 2019. The facelift was built from late 2016 and sold from 2017.
  • Most common: coolant leaks from the water pump and thermostat housing, and water through the sunroof and rear doors.
  • Recall: the steering-gear bolt recall (48VS) is free to fix. Check the VIN with a VW dealer, because the hatchback scope is unclear.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because coolant and water leaks are common and the Haldex and timing faults are costly.
  • DIY: 2/5, because the water pump sits under the intake manifold and the Haldex work needs the rear axle opened.
  • Prefer: a car with a timing belt record and a wet DSG oil change record. Avoid: a car with a sweet coolant smell and no service proof.

Engines and gearboxes

  • EA211 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI (petrol): toothed belt, changed roughly every 120,000 to 210,000 km. On the 1.2 TSI the belt can tear after a camshaft-wheel defect, mainly on cars built to the end of 2014.
  • EA888 2.0 TSI, Gen 3 (GTI and Golf R): timing chain. A US bulletin covers a cold-start rattle. Intake valve carbon and PCV faults are reported.
  • 2.0 TDI (EA288, diesel): the US 2015 cars have an extended emissions warranty and a Phase 1 and Phase 2 fix.
  • DQ200 dry 7-speed DSG: see the DQ200 guide.
  • DQ250 (6-speed) and DQ381 (7-speed) wet DSG: oil change every 60,000 km. The 2018 Golf R with DQ381 needs the 34K1 pump action.
  • Manual: a 2019 US GTI manual can stall when stopped in neutral or with the clutch pressed. A software update (Service Action 24FD) fixes it.

Before you buy

  1. Haldex service record (Golf R and 4MOTION). Ask for proof of the service. Bad result: no record, or a Haldex pump fault or lost rear drive. Costs about 115 USD for the service and several thousand USD for a rear unit (US, year not given).
  2. Timing belt record (EA211 engines). Ask for a belt change between 120,000 and 210,000 km. Bad result: no change record at a high mileage. A belt change costs 600 to 1,000 EUR (Germany, 2026).
  3. Coolant check (EA888 and EA211). Look for coolant residue in the engine bay and smell for a sweet coolant smell. Bad result: residue or a sweet smell. A scanner reads code P00B7 (low coolant flow). A pump job costs up to 835.25 USD in parts (US, 2024).
  4. Wet DSG oil record. Ask for an oil change at 60,000 km. Bad result: no record. The job costs 200 to 470 EUR (Germany, 2026).
  5. Cold-start rattle (GTI and Golf R). Start the cold engine and listen. Bad result: a rattle. A dealer checks the chain tensioner under US bulletin TT 10-18-01. If seven or more notches on the tensioner are visible, the timing chain is replaced.
  6. Intake carbon record (GTI and Golf R). Ask for a carbon clean at about 80,000 to 90,000 miles. Bad result: no record on a high-mileage car. A garage quotes about 6 hours plus 1.5 hours for the clean (US).
  7. Steering recall (48VS). Give the VIN to a VW dealer. Bad result: an open recall. The hatchback scope is unclear, so the VIN check decides. The repair is free.
  8. 34K1 action (2018 Golf R with DQ381). Ask a dealer to check the VIN for the 34K1 action. Bad result: the action is not done.
  9. Sunroof drains and damp carpets. Lift the boot carpet and check the footwell for damp. Bad result: damp carpet or water in the boot. The US class action covers water damage for 7 years or 80,000 miles.
  10. Fault scan and battery. A scanner (VCDS or OBDeleven) reads the fault memory. Bad result: stored faults. On start-stop cars, check that the battery is AGM or EFB.

In detail

Water pump and thermostat housing leaks

Coolant leaks from the water pump and the thermostat housing on the EA888 (GTI and Golf R) and the EA211 TSI engines. A US garage says the leak points are where the housing meets the block and where the pump joins the housing. The thermostat is not usually the failure point. A US parts guide calls the pump almost entirely plastic, and heat cycling makes it crack and leak. The pump sits under the intake manifold. A US garage reports about a day of work on a 2017 GTI, which was leaking at about 25,000 miles. The scanner code is P00B7 (low coolant flow). Prices: genuine kit up to 835.25 USD, INA kit up to 396.72 USD, about 6 hours labour (US, 2024).

Wet DSG service and the 34K1 pump

The wet DSG (DQ250 and DQ381) needs an oil change every 60,000 km. In Germany the oil change costs 200 to 470 EUR (2026). US Service Action 34K1 covers the DQ381 auxiliary hydraulic pump on the 2018 Golf R. The fault code is P0C29. The action extends cover to 10 years or 120,000 miles. The VW bulletin is TSB 2070973.

Timing belt and timing chain

The EA211 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI have a toothed belt, not a chain. The belt change is due roughly between 120,000 and 210,000 km, depending on the engine. In Germany the change costs 600 to 1,000 EUR (2026). On the 1.2 TSI the belt can tear after a camshaft-wheel defect. This is rare and mostly affects cars built to the end of 2014.

The GTI and Golf R use the EA888 chain. US technical tip TT 10-18-01 covers a cold-start rattle on the 1.8 and 2.0 TSI, model years 2010 to 2018. The dealer checks the chain tensioner. If seven or more notches on the tensioner are visible, the timing chain is replaced. Otherwise the camshaft with adjuster is replaced.

Steering-gear bolt recall (48VS)

Corrosion can tear a bolt head on the steering gear, and the steering can be lost. The workshop replaces the bolted connection free of charge, in up to one hour. The German recall (KBA 17016R) covers Golf, Golf Variant, Tiguan, Touran and Caddy built from 24 September 2013 to 1 July 2024. The hatchback scope is unclear, so check the VIN with a VW dealer. VW action codes are 48VS, 48LG and 48T7. The recall covers about 896,000 vehicles in Germany and about 2.16 million worldwide, all VW models together.

Water ingress from sunroof and doors

The US sunroof frame can crack where the plastic drain channel and the steel plates expand at different rates. The fix uses adhesive foil patches and updated parts (update 60C7). The front sunroof drains block with moist debris. Service Action 60E5 (27 February 2020) inspects and cleans them and removes the drain flaps. The rear panoramic sunroof drains can be pinched (TSB 60-18-03). The US class action (VWP-23-06) covers water damage to the interior and electrics for 7 years or 80,000 miles. It covers Golf and GTI model years 2015 to 2018, SportWagen 2015 to 2019 and Alltrack 2017 to 2019. Cover for model years 2015 to 2017 is prorated.

Rear door speaker seals leak water early. Water in the front footwell can come from a detached A/C evaporator drain. Owners also report water in the boot and wheel well.

Haldex pump and screen on the Golf R

The Golf R and 4MOTION use the Haldex 5 coupling. It has a pump and a screen, not a true filter. A US garage reports the screens clogged about 10,000 miles after service. A Russian report describes dirty oil damaging the pump at 40,000 to 60,000 km. Service costs about 115 USD (US garage, year not given). A new rear differential unit costs several thousand USD.

Intake valve carbon and PCV on the EA888

The EA888 Gen 3 (GTI and Golf R) builds up carbon on the intake valves. A US garage describes walnut blasting at about 80,000 to 90,000 miles. The job needs the fuel pump hard line and the intake manifold removed. It takes about 6 hours of labour, plus 1.5 hours for the carbon clean. A US garage also reports that the PCV diaphragm can rip. Oil is then forced out at the rear main seal, the camshaft bridge seals and the timing covers.

DQ200 dry DSG

The dry 7-speed DSG (DQ200) is fitted to most petrol Golf 7 cars with a DSG, except the GTI and Golf R. Its faults, service and costs are covered in the DQ200 guide. Read that guide before you buy a car with this gearbox.

Maintenance

  • Engine oil: Volkswagen's oil consumption standard is 0.5 litres per 1,000 km (VW bulletin 17-14-03). Check the oil level between changes.
  • Timing belt (EA211): change roughly between 120,000 and 210,000 km, depending on the engine.
  • Wet DSG oil: change every 60,000 km.
  • Sunroof drains: have them inspected and cleaned. US Service Action 60E5 is the fix for blocked front drains.
