At a glance
- Years: 2016 to today. Facelift in 2020. SQ2 with 300 PS.
- Reliability: 4/5. About 96.5% of Q2s pass the first inspection without defects. Brake discs are the main fault.
- DIY: 3/5. Brake jobs are doable, but rear brake discs need a scanner to open the electric parking brake.
- Biggest risk: the brake pedal weld recall on 2020 cars. Check it first.
- Prefer: a car with full service history and dealer proof that recall work is done.
- Avoid: open recalls and cars with no service records.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.0 TFSI (DKR, DLA, DUS): manual or dry S tronic. From 2021 the car had 110 PS, not 116 PS. See the 1.0 TSI guide.
- 1.4 TFSI (CZE, 2016 to 2018): dry S tronic only. Its known faults are on the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI guide.
- 1.5 TFSI (DPC, DXD): cold-start judder, mostly on manual cars. See the 1.5 TSI evo guide.
- 2.0 TFSI (DKZ, DNN, DNU): wet S tronic. No engine guide yet. Ask for oil change records.
- 2.0 TDI EA288 (DTR, DXR, DFG, DTT, DFH): the 190 PS version left the range in summer 2018. See the 2.0 TDI guide.
- 1.6 TDI (DGT): manual or dry S tronic. No engine guide yet.

Before you buy
- Measure the rear brake discs and look at the pads. Bad result: worn-down discs or pads. A rear disc change costs 251-487 EUR (Germany, year not stated). Rear changes need a scanner to open the electric parking brake.
- Ask a dealer to confirm that recall 46I7 (brake pedal weld) is done. Bad result: an open campaign or no record.
- On a cold start, check that the electric parking brake works properly. Bad result: it releases by itself. Ask a dealer to read the fault memory with a scanner.
- Ask a dealer to confirm that recall 97HO (fuse box plug) is done on right-hand-drive cars. Bad result: an open campaign. No scanner needed.
- Look at the side blade on the C-pillar (the pillar behind the rear door). Bad result: a blade that is loose or partly off. Ask for recall 53D2 status.
- Ask a dealer to confirm that recall 72H9 (headrest weld) is done. Bad result: an open campaign.
- Ask a dealer to check the VIN (the car's chassis number) for any open recall campaign. Bad result: any open campaign.
