At a glance
- Years: the hatchback was built from August 2012 to November 2019. The facelift was built from late 2016 and sold from 2017.
- Most common: coolant leaks from the water pump and thermostat housing, and water through the sunroof and rear doors.
- Recall: the steering-gear bolt recall (48VS) is free to fix. Check the VIN with a VW dealer, because the hatchback scope is unclear.
- Reliability: 3/5, because coolant and water leaks are common and the Haldex and timing faults are costly.
- DIY: 2/5, because the water pump sits under the intake manifold and the Haldex work needs the rear axle opened.
- Prefer: a car with a timing belt record and a wet DSG oil change record. Avoid: a car with a sweet coolant smell and no service proof.
Engines and gearboxes
- EA211 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI (petrol): toothed belt, changed roughly every 120,000 to 210,000 km. On the 1.2 TSI the belt can tear after a camshaft-wheel defect, mainly on cars built to the end of 2014.
- EA888 2.0 TSI, Gen 3 (GTI and Golf R): timing chain. A US bulletin covers a cold-start rattle. Intake valve carbon and PCV faults are reported.
- 2.0 TDI (EA288, diesel): the US 2015 cars have an extended emissions warranty and a Phase 1 and Phase 2 fix.
- DQ200 dry 7-speed DSG: see the DQ200 guide.
- DQ250 (6-speed) and DQ381 (7-speed) wet DSG: oil change every 60,000 km. The 2018 Golf R with DQ381 needs the 34K1 pump action.
- Manual: a 2019 US GTI manual can stall when stopped in neutral or with the clutch pressed. A software update (Service Action 24FD) fixes it.
Known issues
| Issue | Affects | Typical km | Repair cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water pump and thermostat housing leaks | EA888 (GTI, Golf R) and EA211 TSI engines | From about 40,000 km (25,000 miles, US) | Parts up to 835.25 USD (genuine kit) or 396.72 USD (INA kit), about 6 hours labour (US, 2024) |
| Wet DSG service and the 34K1 pump | DQ250 (6-speed) and DQ381 (7-speed) wet DSG; 2018 Golf R pump action | Oil change every 60,000 km | Oil change 200 to 470 EUR (Germany, 2026) |
| Timing belt and timing chain | EA211 1.0 to 1.5 TSI (belt); EA888 1.8 and 2.0 TSI (chain, US bulletin) | Belt change 120,000 to 210,000 km | Belt 600 to 1,000 EUR (Germany, 2026) |
| Steering-gear bolt recall (48VS) | Golf, Golf Variant, Tiguan, Touran and Caddy, Germany built 24 Sep 2013 to 1 Jul 2024 (hatchback scope unclear) | Not applicable (recall) | Free, up to one hour |
| Water ingress from sunroof and doors | Panoramic sunroof on Golf, GTI, SportWagen and Alltrack (US); rear door speaker seals | Not given | Covered by the US class action for 7 years or 80,000 miles (prorated for MY 2015-2017) |
| Haldex pump and screen on the Golf R | Golf R and 4MOTION (Haldex 5) | About 16,000 km (10,000 miles) after a service (US) | Service about 115 USD (US garage, year not given) |
| Intake valve carbon and PCV on the EA888 | EA888 Gen 3 2.0 TSI (GTI, Golf R) | About 130,000 to 145,000 km (80,000 to 90,000 miles) | About 6 hours labour plus 1.5 hours for the carbon clean (US garage, year not given) |
| DQ200 dry DSG | Dry 7-speed DSG | See the DQ200 guide | See the DQ200 guide |
Before you buy
- Haldex service record (Golf R and 4MOTION). Ask for proof of the service. Bad result: no record, or a Haldex pump fault or lost rear drive. Costs about 115 USD for the service and several thousand USD for a rear unit (US, year not given).
- Timing belt record (EA211 engines). Ask for a belt change between 120,000 and 210,000 km. Bad result: no change record at a high mileage. A belt change costs 600 to 1,000 EUR (Germany, 2026).
- Coolant check (EA888 and EA211). Look for coolant residue in the engine bay and smell for a sweet coolant smell. Bad result: residue or a sweet smell. A scanner reads code P00B7 (low coolant flow). A pump job costs up to 835.25 USD in parts (US, 2024).
- Wet DSG oil record. Ask for an oil change at 60,000 km. Bad result: no record. The job costs 200 to 470 EUR (Germany, 2026).
- Cold-start rattle (GTI and Golf R). Start the cold engine and listen. Bad result: a rattle. A dealer checks the chain tensioner under US bulletin TT 10-18-01. If seven or more notches on the tensioner are visible, the timing chain is replaced.
- Intake carbon record (GTI and Golf R). Ask for a carbon clean at about 80,000 to 90,000 miles. Bad result: no record on a high-mileage car. A garage quotes about 6 hours plus 1.5 hours for the clean (US).
- Steering recall (48VS). Give the VIN to a VW dealer. Bad result: an open recall. The hatchback scope is unclear, so the VIN check decides. The repair is free.
- 34K1 action (2018 Golf R with DQ381). Ask a dealer to check the VIN for the 34K1 action. Bad result: the action is not done.
- Sunroof drains and damp carpets. Lift the boot carpet and check the footwell for damp. Bad result: damp carpet or water in the boot. The US class action covers water damage for 7 years or 80,000 miles.
- Fault scan and battery. A scanner (VCDS or OBDeleven) reads the fault memory. Bad result: stored faults. On start-stop cars, check that the battery is AGM or EFB.
