At a glance

  • Years: on sale in Germany from December 2019. Cars built before mid-2020 had the most software work.
  • Most common: software faults. The emergency call, infotainment and driver assistance all needed updates or service actions.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because the software faults led to recalls and service actions, and gearbox faults are costly.
  • DIY: 1/5, because most fixes need a dealer's diagnostic tool.
  • Prefer: a car where a dealer confirms the software updates were done. Avoid: a car built before mid-2020 with no record of those updates.

Engines and gearboxes

  • EA211 evo 1.0 and 1.5 TSI (petrol): small turbo petrol engines. The "eTSI" versions are 48 V mild hybrids with a belt starter-generator. See the EA211 TSI guide.
  • EA288 evo 2.0 TDI (diesel): see the diesel issue below.
  • DQ200 dry 7-speed DSG: a dry clutch automatic. Judder and clutch faults are covered in the DQ200 guide.
  • DQ381 wet 7-speed DSG: named for the Golf 8. No fault is confirmed for it on this page.

Before you buy

  1. DQ200 gearbox. Ask the dealer whether the gearbox software is up to date, then drive off from cold. Bad result: a jolt or shudder when pulling away. A new mechatronic unit (the gearbox control unit) costs about 3,000 to 4,000 EUR in Germany (year not stated).
  2. Emergency call and infotainment updates. Ask a dealer to check the car's record for the 2020 emergency call update and the 2021 and 2022 infotainment updates. Bad result: an update is missing.
  3. Judder. Pull away gently from cold. Bad result: a judder or jerk at low speed. Ask whether the engine software is up to date.
  4. Infotainment. Use the navigation, phone and climate controls for about ten minutes. Bad result: freezes, reboots or a slow start.
  5. Assistance systems. On a test drive, check emergency braking, Travel Assist and the parking aids. Bad result: a "not available" message, or braking for no reason.
  6. 12 V battery. With the engine off, measure the battery voltage with a multimeter. Bad result: below 12.3 V.

In detail

eCall software recall and 2020 delivery stop

In May 2020 Volkswagen stopped Golf 8 deliveries. The software in the online connection unit could not always send data, so the emergency call (eCall) could not be guaranteed. Deliveries restarted in June 2020. A software update fixes the unit. Cars built later got it in the factory, and cars already sold got it through a recall. About 15,000 cars in Germany were in the recall. The German vehicle authority (KBA) named model years 2019 and 2020. The sources give no recall reference number.

Infotainment crashes and freezes

The MIB3 infotainment screen crashed and froze in early cars. Early cars also started slowly and lost smartphone services.

A software campaign in 2021 covered 56,000 cars built up to mid-2020, 26,000 of them in Germany. It was voluntary. From early 2022, existing cars got a voluntary service action with the latest software. New cars got faster hardware with 25 per cent more computing power. Existing cars do not get it.

Assistance system faults

Driver assistance systems fail or react wrongly. Reported faults include emergency braking that triggers for no reason, and systems that react late. Travel Assist, Park Assist, adaptive cruise control (ACC) and parking sensors have also failed. A software update can leave the camera software and the Travel Assist unit on different versions. Then Travel Assist shows "not available".

Judder when pulling away cold

Early 1.5 TSI engines (EA211 evo) judder at low speed under part load, mostly in first to third gear while the engine warms up. The fix is new engine software from the dealer.

DQ200 dry gearbox judder and clutch

The dry 7-speed DSG (DQ200) most often jerks when it starts, mainly when cold or after standing. Shift misfires and emergency mode can come from moisture, oil in the control unit, or a faulty solenoid valve. Often the cause is an outdated or faulty clutch adaptation, not a broken part. Only a dealer's diagnostic tool can redo the adaptation. The software update covers the clutch adaptation and the cold-start strategy below 5 °C. Symptoms often start at 80,000 to 120,000 km, and clutch wear usually shows at 150,000 to 180,000 km. A new mechatronic unit, the gearbox control unit, costs about 3,000 to 4,000 EUR in Germany (year not stated).

Diesel soot, EGR valve and particulate filter

The 2.0 TDI (EA288 evo) uses an SCR catalytic converter that is fed AdBlue, a urea fluid that cuts exhaust NOx. Soot builds up on the injectors and on the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve. This can lead to costly repairs. A dirty EGR valve causes power loss and higher fuel use. The particulate filter (DPF) is at risk when the car mostly makes short trips.

Weak 12 V battery

The 12 V battery is the normal car battery. A rest voltage below 12.3 V, or a drop below 9.5 V while starting, counts as a fault. A weak battery can bring up a warning to charge the 12 V battery while driving.

Recalls

Country Code Years or build range What is done
Germany (KBA) not given Model years 2019 and 2020 Software update for the online connection unit (emergency call)
Europe (56,000 cars, 26,000 in Germany) not given Built up to mid-2020 Software update for infotainment and reversing camera
Europe not given Early cars, from 2022 Voluntary service action: latest infotainment software

Maintenance

  • Diesel: avoid mostly short trips, because they put the particulate filter at risk.
  • DQ200 gearbox: after mechatronic work, the clutch adaptation needs to be done again.
