Before you buy
- Push down on each corner of the van, then drive over bumps. Knocking, a bouncy ride or uneven tyre wear means worn shock absorbers or springs.
- Look through the wheels at the brake discs. Deep lips, cracks or pads near the wear limit mean a brake job is due. On the test drive, brake hard from about 50 km/h. A soft pedal or pulling to one side is a bad result.
- Park over a clean sheet and check the engine and gearbox for oil after the test drive. Fresh drips or a low level mean seal work.
- Switch on every light: low beam, high beam, rear lights and the number-plate lamp. Dark or flickering lamps mean bulb or wiring work.

In detail
Brakes and discs
Brake discs wear faster than average, and pads wear with them. The footbrake can work unevenly. The cause is wear. The fault applies to every Caddy 4, whatever the engine.
Fix: replace the pads and discs. UK prices for a 2018 Caddy 2.0 TDI, ex VAT, from one UK site (RAC Drive): front pads GBP 44-58, front discs GBP 50-88, rear pads GBP 20-73, rear discs GBP 43-82.

Springs and shock absorbers
Shock absorbers wear above average, and axle springs are rated badly at inspection in every model year. Worn dampers make the van bounce and knock over bumps. The second HU check shows the dampers and springs as faults.
Fix: replace the worn shock absorbers and springs. UK price for a 2018 Caddy 2.0 TDI, ex VAT, from one UK site (RAC Drive): front shock absorber GBP 60-106.

Lights
Bulbs and lamps fail more often than on other cars. Rear lights do not always work, and the low beams fail at inspection. The sources name no cause. The fix is a bulb change or a new lamp.
Fix: a front halogen headlamp costs GBP 146-227 in the UK, ex VAT, for a 2018 Caddy 2.0 TDI, from one UK site (RAC Drive).
Sources: CarWiki, firmenauto, AUTO BILD, RAC Drive
Oil loss
Oil loss is rated negative at inspection, and oil leaks are above average. The level can drop between services. The sources do not name a cause or a fix. Where a leak comes from a specific seal, the engine and gearbox guides above say more.
Repair cost: no confirmed price.

Recalls
No recall was found in the sources read. Ask a VW dealer to check the VIN for open campaigns before you buy.
