At a glance

  • Years: built 2003 to 2009, as hatchback, Variant and Golf Plus.
  • Biggest risks: the DQ250 DSG mechatronic (gearbox control unit), 1.4 TSI timing chain stretch, and cracked cylinder heads on the 2.0 TDI pump-injector.
  • Reliability: 2/5, because the DSG, chain and diesel head repairs are costly.
  • DIY: 1/5, because chain, gearbox and cylinder head jobs need a specialist workshop with a diagnostic tool.
  • Prefer: 1.4 16V or 1.6 8V petrol engines with a service record. No common fault is confirmed for them. Avoid: a 1.4 TSI or a DQ250 car with no proof of chain or gearbox work.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.4 TSI, 122-170 PS (EA111): the timing chain can stretch early and cause engine damage. See the EA111 guide.
  • 2.0 TFSI in the GTI (AXX, BWA): the fuel pump cam follower can wear and damage the engine. See the follower check.
  • 2.0 TDI pump-injector, BKD (140 PS) and BMN (170 PS): cylinder heads can crack. These are not the common rail engines.
  • 1.9 TDI, BLS (built June 2005 to October 2008): connecting rod bearings can fail after high mileage.
  • 1.4 16V (BCA, BUD) and 1.6 8V (BGU, BSE, BSF): no common fault confirmed.
  • 1.6 FSI and 2.0 FSI (AXW, BLR, BLX, BVY): no common fault confirmed. The 2.0 FSI was built from 2004 to 2009.
  • R32 3.2 V6: uses the DQ250 gearbox and is named in the US DQ250 campaign.
  • Manual gearbox: flywheel and clutch faults on diesels. See dual-mass flywheel and clutch.
  • DQ250 six-speed wet DSG: mechatronic faults. See DQ250 mechatronic.
  • DQ200 seven-speed dry DSG: fitted with the 1.4 TSI. See the DQ200 guide.

Before you buy

  1. Test drive the car from cold. Watch for judder when pulling away and harsh shifts from 1st to 2nd. A bad result is judder or limp mode, which means the gearbox needs a repair. Ask for gearbox oil change records. A scanner reads the gearbox fault codes.
  2. On a 1.4 TSI, listen for rattling on a cold start. A bad result is rattling, poor running or high oil use. Ask for chain work records before you buy.
  3. On a diesel with a manual gearbox, listen for noise at low revs. Check the clutch engagement point and pedal play. A bad result is loud noise or a late, slipping clutch.
  4. On a 2.0 TDI pump-injector (BKD or BMN), check the coolant level and look for loss with no visible leak. A bad result is coolant loss. A new cylinder head is needed, and a head gasket alone is not enough.
  5. On a GTI, ask for proof that the fuel pump cam follower was checked or replaced. A bad result is no record. A broken follower can cause major engine damage.
  6. On a 1.9 TDI BLS built from June 2005 to October 2008, check the engine code and build date. Ask for oil change records, because regular oil changes delay the damage. A bad result is no service history.
  7. Test every window, including any auto up and down function. A bad result is a window that stops, drops or opens by itself.

In detail

DQ250 mechatronic

The mechatronic is the control unit inside the gearbox. It runs the shift valves. Symptoms are judder when pulling away, harsh 1st to 2nd shifts, and limp mode that limits the car to 2nd, 4th and reverse. The control unit is usually the cause, not the clutch. A repair of single sensors or valves costs a low four-digit sum. An overhauled unit, fitted, costs a mid four-digit sum. A new unit is mostly above 5,000 EUR (Germany, no year). Change the gearbox oil every 60,000 km with original ATF. VW USA ran a free customer campaign for 2007 to 2009 cars, with the GTI and R32 named. The mechatronic was replaced where VW's diagnostic tool flagged it. The warranty was extended to 10 years or 100,000 miles (160,900 km).

TSI timing chain stretch

The timing chain links the crankshaft to the camshafts. On the 1.4 TSI it can stretch. Symptoms are rattling on start or in cold running, poor running and high oil use. If the chain jumps, the timing shifts and the engine can be badly damaged. The fix is a new chain with its tensioner. A chain job alone costs 800 to 1,400 EUR. An engine overhaul after a jumped or broken chain costs 4,000 to 6,000 EUR (Germany, no year).

Dual-mass flywheel and clutch on TDI

The dual-mass flywheel sits between the engine and the clutch and damps vibration. On TDI cars with a manual gearbox it wears early. The first sign is a loud noise from the gearbox at low revs. The clutch can also wear heavily. Before you buy, check the clutch play and the engagement point. The repair is a low four-digit sum; no exact figure is given.

TDI pump-injector cylinder head cracks

The 2.0 TDI pump-injector comes as BKD (140 PS) and BMN (170 PS). Cylinder heads crack, and the first sign is rising coolant loss. The fix is a new cylinder head; a head gasket alone is not enough. No confirmed price is given.

GTI cam follower under the fuel pump

The 2.0 TFSI in the GTI has a cam follower under the high-pressure fuel pump. It wears early. A worn follower can seriously damage the top of the engine. No confirmed repair price is given.

BLS connecting rod bearings

The 1.9 TDI with engine code BLS, built from June 2005 to October 2008, can suffer connecting rod bearing damage. It usually comes after high mileage. Regular oil changes can delay it. No repair cost is given.

Window regulators

Window regulators fail in several ways. Symptoms are a window that drops, detaches from the regulator, retracts, or opens by itself. Causes range from a broken cable or worn motor to a faulty switch. Re-learning the window often helps when the fault is not mechanical. A repair costs about 50 to 600 EUR (Germany, no year).
