At a glance
- Years: 2013 to 2020, with a facelift in 2016/17. The DQ381 gearbox comes from about 2018.
- Reliability: 3/5. Owner surveys are fair, but the gearbox, the suspension and the 4x4 oil pump cost money.
- DIY: 2/5. Oil changes and some suspension parts are home jobs; gearbox, software and 4x4 pump work need a workshop.
- Biggest risks: gearbox faults on the dry DSG, a 4x4 with no Haldex oil record, and suspension wear from about 50,000 km (Za Rulem).
- Prefer: a car with a full service record and proof of DSG and Haldex oil changes. Avoid: a 4x4 with no Haldex oil record and a gearbox with stored faults.
Engines and gearboxes

Before you buy
- Ask for the Haldex oil and filter record on any 4x4. If there is none, budget for the change now and check the pump. Bad result: no record, or a pump that needs replacing.
- Test-drive the DSG from cold, then read the gearbox fault memory with a scanner. Bad result: any stored gearbox fault.
- Lift the car. Check the springs for cracks and breaks, the shocks for oil, and the arm bushes for play. Springs are changed in pairs. Bad result: a broken or cracked spring, or leaking shocks.
- Look for coolant at the pump and thermostat housing of a 1.8 TSI. A leak means the combined module needs replacing. Bad result: wet housing or a low coolant level.
- Switch on every light and check each LED lamp. Bad result: a dead or flickering lamp. A controller repair has no confirmed price.
- Pull back the carpets at the front footwells and check the door drains. Bad result: damp carpet or rust under it.
- Check the tailgate edge around the number plate lamp and the paint on the bonnet and doors. Bad result: bubbling paint or rust at the tailgate.
- Test the screen, navigation and Bluetooth pairing. Ask for the software version. Bad result: freezes or restarts. Skoda updates the software free.
- Open and close the fuel flap several times, including on a cold morning. Bad result: the flap does not open.
- Check open campaigns by VIN with a Skoda dealer before you pay. Bad result: an open campaign on the car.

In detail
Haldex 4x4 coupling oil and pump
Sludge in the Haldex oil can disturb the pre-charge pump, so the rear wheels stop being driven. The oil pump is the first part to fail. Cars built before 2015 are most at risk; later cars have an upgraded pump.
Fix: change the Haldex oil and filter every 20,000 to 40,000 km. Pump failures show up at about 50,000 to 70,000 km. No confirmed price for the pump or the coupling.

Suspension springs, shocks and arm bushes
CarWiki says knocks come from the suspension, mostly from the rear axle. Springs break. Za Rulem says shocks leak early and front control arms and stabilizer struts wear early. AUTO BILD gives TÜV type data in which springs and dampers do worse than average.
Cause: wear and heavy loads. t-online, citing ADAC data, says springs fail above average from the first inspection.
Fix: change the springs in pairs, and replace the shocks, arm bushes and struts as needed. No confirmed price in euro or pounds. Za Rulem puts rear shocks at 50,000 to 70,000 km and front arms and struts at 60,000 to 80,000 km.

Infotainment faults (Columbus, Amundsen, MIB)
The screen freezes, the unit restarts, and navigation drops out. On MIB units, KFZ Dietrich says the restarts happen during Bluetooth pairing, and the display drops out below minus 10 degrees. Software updates help with many of these faults; they have largely fixed the Columbus trouble.
Fix: a software update on an SD card, free from Skoda. Ask for proof of the latest version. No hardware price is confirmed.

Water in the front doors
Water collects at the bottom of the front doors when the car stands. Seals channel it into the footwells. PistonHeads names blocked door drain plugs as a cause, and says door seals can perish on early cars. Kolesa says the rear doors have no drain holes, so condensation collects inside.
Fix: the sources name no fix beyond clearing the drains. No confirmed price.

LED headlamp failures
Low beam and front lighting show above-average defect rates in t-online's ADAC inspection data. Older models have defective LEDs. When an LED headlamp fails, Kolesa says its controller board oxidises, and the repair is expensive. Only cars with LED headlamps are affected.
Fix: repair or replace the controller. No confirmed price.

1.8 TSI coolant pump and thermostat module
According to Za Rulem, the plastic coolant pump housing of the 1.8 TSI leaks at 100,000 to 120,000 km. Auto.ru says the thermostat can stick before 100,000 km. The pump and the thermostat share one module, and the module cannot be serviced on its own.
Fix: replace the combined module. Za Rulem says an aftermarket module costs about a third less. No confirmed price in euro or pounds.

Paint and tailgate rust
The paint flakes and looks uneven. It adheres poorly and the chips spread rust. Rust shows at the tailgate, around the number plate lamp. Auto.ru names the bonnet, the lower doors and the wheel arches as problem spots.
Fix: touch up chips quickly. In extreme cases the tailgate is replaced. No confirmed price.

Fuel flap lock actuator
The actuator of the fuel flap lock fails. Za Rulem says it has no cable backup, so a winter failure can block refuelling. Kolesa says the lock is flimsy and has no emergency opening.
Fix: replace the actuator. No confirmed price.
