At a glance

  • Years: built 2017 to 2023. The 2022 facelift brought a new nose and LED matrix lights. Diesel ended in 2020.
  • Most common: the 1.0 EcoBoost oil pump drive and coolant leaks are the engine risks. Lights, springs and dampers are the usual inspection faults.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because TÜV results are average and the 1.0 EcoBoost oil pump fault can destroy the engine, but most other faults are small.
  • DIY: 2/5, because the buyer checks are simple, but engine and belt work needs a garage.
  • Prefer: a car with records of belt and oil pump work on a 1.0 EcoBoost, and recall fixes done.
  • Avoid: a 1.0 EcoBoost with no oil pump or coolant records, or one that is losing coolant.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.1 Ti-VCT petrol, 70 to 85 PS: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.0 EcoBoost petrol, 85 to 140 PS: the wet timing belt, oil pump drive and coolant hose faults are in the 1.0 EcoBoost guide. Mk8 facts are in the Known issues below.
  • 1.0 EcoBoost Hybrid, 125 and 155 PS (48V mild hybrid): no engine fault confirmed in the sources read. A hybrid battery ground connection is in the Recalls table.
  • Fiesta ST 1.5 EcoBoost, 200 PS: no fault confirmed in the sources read, apart from the oil separator recall in the Recalls table.
  • 1.5 TDCi diesel, 85 and 120 PS: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 5-speed manual (1.1): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed manual: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed torque-converter automatic (1.0 EcoBoost 100 PS, to 2020): no fault confirmed in the sources read.

Before you buy

  1. Ask for records of oil pump drive and wet timing belt work on a 1.0 EcoBoost. Bad result: no record, or an oil pressure warning light. No scanner needed.
  2. With the engine cold, check the coolant level and look for wet stains at the thermostat housing and hoses. Bad result: low coolant or a leak. No scanner needed.
  3. Ask a Ford dealer to check the VIN for open recalls. Bad result: an open campaign with no fix done. Recalls for the fuel line, seat belt retractor and steering ball joint are in the table. No scanner needed.
  4. Read the last inspection report for springs and dampers, and drive over a bumpy road. Bad result: springs or dampers flagged in the report, or a loose ride. No tools needed.
  5. Test low beam, front lamps, turn signals and the rear lights. Bad result: any light weak or out. No tools needed.
  6. Look under the car for exhaust leaks and listen for rattles on a cold start. Bad result: a leak or a loose exhaust. No tools needed.
