Ford 1.0 EcoBoost petrol engine: problems, costs and what to check

Wet belt, oil pump and coolant hose faults are the known ones. Buy with belt invoices, oil records and no coolant loss.

At a glance

  • What it is: Ford's 1.0-litre turbo three-cylinder petrol engine, used in the Fiesta, Focus and EcoSport. The US probe covers Fiesta 2014-2017, Focus 2015-2018 and EcoSport 2018-2021.
  • Main faults: a timing belt that runs in oil and can crack or break, an oil pump belt that can cut oil pressure, and coolant hoses that can burst and cause overheating.
  • Belt or chain: from about 2018 some engines have a timing chain instead of a belt. The oil pump still has a wet belt.
  • Reliability: 2/5, because the belt, oil pump and coolant hose faults each appear in several sources, and US regulators are looking at the belt.
  • DIY: 2/5, because a belt job is a workshop job that costs about 600 EUR or more in Germany.
  • Prefer and avoid: prefer a car with belt invoices, oil records in the approved spec and no coolant loss. Avoid an oil pressure warning light, low coolant, and a car past about 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or six years with no belt change.

Before you buy

  1. Timing belt record (no scanner needed). Ask for a dated invoice with the mileage showing the timing belt was changed. Bad: no record, or a car past about 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or six years with no change.
  2. Oil pump belt (no scanner needed). Ask whether the oil pump belt was changed with the timing belt. Bad: no record of it.
  3. Oil pressure (test drive). Watch the dashboard on the drive. Bad: an oil pressure warning light, then a loss of power.
  4. Coolant (no scanner needed). Check the coolant level when the engine is cold, and look for wet stains around the hoses and the expansion tank. Bad: low coolant, a leak, or a temperature gauge that climbs.
  5. Coolant hose action (UK cars built October 2011 to October 2013). Ask for proof the coolant hose field service action was done. Bad: no record.
  6. Oil records (workshop). Ask for oil change invoices showing 5W-20 oil to Ford spec WSS-M2C948-B. Ask a workshop to check the oil strainer. Bad: a different spec, or no records.
  7. Recall check. Enter the VIN in the official recall check for the car's country. Bad: an open recall on the car.

In detail

Wet timing belt

Symptoms. The belt can crack, wear or break. The US probe describes a low oil pressure warning light, then a sudden loss of power, sometimes with no warning.

Cause. The belt runs in engine oil. German sources name the wrong or unapproved engine oil as a cause of belt damage.

Which cars. The US probe covers Fiesta 2014-2017, Focus 2015-2018 and EcoSport 2018-2021.

Fix. Ford cut the recommended interval from 150,000 miles (about 240,000 km) to 100,000 miles (about 160,000 km) or six years, in a notice to US regulators on 2 June 2026. The notice is for US cars. The sources give no new interval for Germany. The sources give no revised part number and no fix procedure.

Cost. Germany: 600 to 1,500 EUR or more, parts and labour. A 2024 press report says 1,500 EUR and more. A garage site says 600 to 1,500 EUR, and a booking portal says from about 830 EUR. Both have no year.

Recalls. US probe, not a recall. See the Recalls table.

Oil pump belt and oil pressure

Symptoms. The oil pressure warning comes on, then the engine loses power. In some cases the power goes with no warning.

Cause. A wet belt also drives the oil pump. The sources link damage to this belt with lost oil pressure.

Which cars. The same models as the timing belt probe. The sources give no build range for the oil pump belt alone.

Fix. The sources name no fix for the oil pump belt.

Cost. Not stated.

Recalls. A US recall in late 2023 covered Focus 2016-2018 and EcoSport 2018-2022. The sources do not say clearly whether it fixes the oil pump. See the Recalls table.

Coolant hose and overheating

Symptoms. Coolant leaks from the hose or the degas pipe to the expansion tank. The engine overheats.

Cause. The degas pipe carries hot steam from the water-cooled turbo back to the expansion tank. A weak pipe leaks. Overheating can cause head gasket failure, and in some cases a new engine.

Which cars. The UK 2015 action covers Focus 1.0 cars built October 2011 to October 2013. Owners of other years also report hose failures.

Fix. The UK action reworked the coolant hose. Ford says 96% of affected cars were reworked. The sources give no part numbers.

Cost. Not stated.

Maintenance

  • Timing belt. Ford's original interval was 150,000 miles, given in German sources as up to 240,000 km. Ford now recommends 100,000 miles (about 160,000 km) or six years.
  • Oil. Use 5W-20 oil to Ford spec WSS-M2C948-B. German press and a Russian owner's service record both name this spec.
  • Oil strainer. Have a workshop check the oil strainer regularly. One German press report says every third or fourth oil change.
  • Oil change interval. The sources give no Ford interval.
  • Coolant. The sources give no coolant service interval.
