At a glance
- Most common: diesel filters clog or crack, the 8-speed automatic can shift roughly, and 2018-2020 cars had several wiring loom recalls.
- Reliability: 3/5, because most faults are recall work or filter and gearbox repairs, and no engine fails widely.
- DIY: 2/5, because filter, gearbox and recall work need a dealer. Battery, brake and fluid checks are simple.
- Prefer: a petrol car with the manual gearbox and a full recall history.
- Avoid: a diesel used mostly on short trips, and an 8-speed automatic that shudders or hesitates when cold.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.0 EcoBoost petrol: see the 1.0 EcoBoost guide.
- 1.5 EcoBlue diesel: filter regeneration problems; see Diesel particulate filter.
- 2.0 EcoBlue diesel: the same filter risk and a timing belt that runs in oil. See Diesel particulate filter and Maintenance.
- 8-speed automatic (8F35): a torque converter gearbox, used up to 2022 and on diesels. It can shift roughly when cold; see 8-speed automatic shift faults.
- 7-speed dual-clutch: no fault confirmed in the sources read.

Before you buy
- On a diesel, ask for proof of the filter campaign (KBA 16091R, Ford 24E06). Check for a filter warning and scan for fault code P2002 and regeneration data on a long drive.
- Drive an automatic from cold. Delayed engagement, slip or a hard shift is a bad sign. A scanner should show no gearbox fault codes; ask whether the software was updated.
- Check the VIN with Ford and the GOV.UK recall checker, then look at the loom near the gearbox. Rough idle, power loss or a stall points to chafing.
- Look through the wheel spokes for grooves and a sharp lip on the brake discs, and read the last inspection report.
- Test start-stop, auto-hold, the parking sensors and traffic sign recognition. Check the age and voltage of the 12 V battery.

In detail
Diesel particulate filter
The diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot and burns it off on a long run. When regeneration fails, the filter clogs. A filter warning light, fault code P2002 or a failed emissions test are the signs; a cracked filter can leak.
German press reports of the recall, citing the KBA, give a design cause: the particle count rises over the filter's life. The recall names the 1.5 diesel. A PistonHeads owner reports a blocked filter on a 2.0 diesel. The fix is a software update that recalibrates regeneration, plus a new filter if damaged. Two recalls cover it: KBA 16091R / Ford 24E06 for the 1.5 diesel built May 2014 to January 2023 (the range also covers the older Focus III), and DVSA R/2025/094. A replacement filter is expensive; no confirmed price.

8-speed automatic shift faults
The 8-speed automatic (8F35) uses a torque converter, the classic fluid coupling. It can pick gears late, slip or shift hard, especially when cold. The cause is the control software and its adaptation, which learns shift points. A software update may help. Ford replaces the whole unit only under warranty. Dealer prices found are general Ford figures, not a repair cost for this car, so no price is given.

Engine wiring loom chafing
The engine wiring loom can rub on a stud or bolt on the gearbox housing, or be damaged when an earlier repair fits the wrong stud. Rough idle, power loss or a stall are the signs. Several campaigns cover cars built 2018-2020. The dealer checks clearance, replaces the stud with a bolt or screw, reroutes the harness and repairs damage. The work is free under the recall.

Brake discs
German inspections find grooved or worn brake discs more often than average. Deep grooves and heavy wear are the signs. New discs and pads are the fix. No mileage or price is confirmed.

12 V battery and electronics
AUTO BILD names discharged starter batteries, and gebrauchtwagenberater.de ties them to start-stop and auto-hold faults. gebrauchtwagenberater.de also reports parking sensors, SYNC 3 and traffic sign recognition playing up; its sign reader can show 100 in a 30 zone. A new battery fixes the first group. No price is confirmed.

Maintenance
- Diesel: kfz-dietrich names frequent short trips as the thing to check for filter regeneration. Give the filter regular longer runs.
- 2.0 EcoBlue: the timing belt runs in oil. kolesa.ru and gebrauchtwagenberater.de both name it, and gebrauchtwagenberater.de says correct oil is the most important factor.
