At a glance
- Years: 2014-2022, with the 2019 facelift. Hatchback, saloon and estate. Petrol 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 EcoBoost and a 2.0 hybrid. Diesel 1.6, 1.5 and 2.0 TDCi, then 1.5 and 2.0 EcoBlue from 2019.
- The Powershift gearbox on 2.0 TDCi cars (2014-2019) and the timing belt that runs in oil on the 2.0 EcoBlue (2019 on) are the main risks.
- Reliability: 3/5. The engines themselves show few confirmed faults, but the Powershift gearbox and the EcoBlue belt can be costly.
- DIY: 2/5. Gearbox, belt and EGR work needs a workshop and a scanner.
- Prefer: a car with full service records, including gearbox oil changes on a Powershift car.
- Avoid: a 2.0 TDCi Powershift with no gearbox oil records, and a 2.0 EcoBlue with no record of the belt.

Before you buy
- On a Powershift car, drive from cold and check for judder when pulling away and jerky shifts. Ask for gearbox oil change records. A scanner reads the gearbox fault codes.
- On a 2.0 EcoBlue, ask for proof of the timing belt inspection or change. Without it, budget for the belt job.
- On a diesel, have the fault memory read for EGR codes P0401 and P0402.
- Check the brake disc wear and ask when the brakes were last done.
- Test the Sync screen, navigation and Bluetooth, and ask whether the software was updated.
- Ask a Ford dealer to check open campaigns for the car's VIN before you buy.

In detail
Powershift gearbox
- Symptoms: judder when pulling away and jerky shifts.
- Cause: the Getrag 6DCT450 wet dual-clutch gearbox. Gebrauchtwagenberater says it has a bad reputation. Kfz-dietrich, a German garage, names clutch wear (wear limit 2.2 mm) and the mechatronic unit.
- Which cars: 2.0 TDCi with Powershift, 2014-2019.
- Fix: gearbox oil change, clutch or mechatronic repair, then a learning drive. Change the gearbox oil every 50,000-60,000 km.
- Cost: no confirmed price in the sources read.

EcoBlue timing belt in oil
- Symptoms: often none until late. Oil pressure drops step by step as belt debris reaches the oil filter and pump intake.
- Cause: the timing belt runs in engine oil. Oil additives and traces of fuel attack the rubber over time.
- Which cars: the 2.0 EcoBlue diesel, 2019 on. Both sources cover the EcoBlue family, also fitted to the S-Max II, not the Mondeo by name.
- Fix: inspect and replace the belt in time. Kolesa.ru advises inspection from about 70,000-80,000 km, replacement at about 100,000-110,000 km, and an oil change at least every 10,000 km.
- Cost: no confirmed price in the sources read.

Diesel EGR valve
- Symptoms: engine warning light and EGR fault codes P0401 and P0402 (kfz-dietrich).
- Cause: the EGR valve clogs at high mileage.
- Which cars: diesel engines. The sources name no engine code.
- Fix: clean or replace the EGR valve.
- Cost: no confirmed price in the sources read.

Brake discs wear early
- Symptoms: worn discs at inspection.
- Cause: heavy disc wear. Volksstimme (dpa) says the discs are worn in most model years, and the ADAC diesel report names an early-worn brake system as a common TÜV defect.
- Which cars: all variants.
- Fix: new discs and pads.
- Cost: no confirmed price in the sources read.

Sync infotainment
- Symptoms: slow screen and crashes.
- Cause: software. Gebrauchtwagenberater calls Sync 2 slow and prone to crashes. Kfz-dietrich names Sync 3 software faults from model year 2017 and says most cases are software only.
- Which cars: Sync 2 cars, and Sync 3 from about mid 2016.
- Fix: a software update first; replace the module only if that fails.
- Cost: no confirmed price in the sources read.
