At a glance
- Years: built 2007 to 2014.
- Reliability: 3/5. The 2.0 petrol has the serious faults: timing chain, oil use and cracked heads. No fault is confirmed for the 1.6 petrol.
- DIY: 2/5. Chain, turbo, head and CVT work need a workshop.
- Prefer: a 1.6 petrol with service records.
- Avoid: a 2.0 petrol with no oil records, and a 2.0 CVT with no fluid or cooler check.
Engines and gearboxes

- 2.0 dCi, M9R: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- 1.6 dCi, R9M: injector and high-pressure pump wear, see the table.
- 5-speed manual (1.6 petrol only): second-gear synchro ring and clutch wear, see the table.

Before you buy
- On a 2.0 MR20, ask for timing chain or timing service records. A stretched chain needs a workshop to check it.
- On a 2.0 CVT, look for oil under the car and ask for fluid change records, about every 30,000 km. Walk away from a CVT with no fluid history.
- On a 1.5 dCi, ask for oil change records. Blue, white or black smoke, whistling, or high oil use are bad signs.
- On a 2.0 MR20, check the oil level after a drive and ask for oil records. Heavy oil use is a bad sign. Two sites also name cracked heads, which let coolant into the oil.
- On a 1.5 dCi or 1.6 dCi, ask for injector and high-pressure pump records before you accept a rough idle.
- On a manual, test the clutch on a hill. Slipping is a bad sign. On the 5-speed, a second gear that is hard to engage points to a worn synchro ring.
- With the front wheels off the ground, rock each wheel and check the tie rod ends. Play means a repair is due. Check the steering rack for play too.
- Bounce each corner of the car. Shock absorbers wear early on this model, so a car that keeps bouncing needs new ones.
- Look under the sills and the rear subframe. Rust is reported on older cars, mainly the sills. Walk away from flaking metal or holes.
- Check every recall campaign for the VIN with a Nissan dealer before you buy. The brake-line and steering-wheel campaigns are in the table below.

In detail
Timing chain stretch on the MR20
The timing chain stretches. A chain that jumps can damage the engine (gebrauchtwagenberater.de, carwiki.de). zr.ru reports stretch from about 80,000 km. It says the chain is replaced at around 150,000 km, and that replacement is not easy. The sources give no price.
Cost: no confirmed price.

Oil burning on the MR20
The engine burns oil. German press names a faulty crankcase ventilation as the usual cause, and worn valve stem seals less often. Russian press names oil-control rings that stick, which can start from just over 50,000 km. The sources give a range of 50,000-100,000 km. Check the oil level between changes.
Cost: no confirmed price.

CVT oil cooler leak
The oil cooler of the 2.0 CVT (JF011E) can leak. Oil loss can damage the CVT, and a flush is recommended (gebrauchtwagenberater.de). Carwiki advises regular oil checks. Russian press advises a fluid change about every 30,000 km (auto.ru, zr.ru). The sources give no mileage at failure and no price.
Cost: no confirmed price.

Turbo wear and oil starvation on the K9K
Missed oil changes, sludge or a blocked oil screen starve the turbo bearing (KFZ Dietrich, a Renault K9K engine page). Symptoms are bearing play, oil use, blue smoke, and whistling or grinding. Carwiki says turbo problems on these diesels were mainly up to model year 2011. German press advises a budget for turbo repair at high mileage (gebrauchtwagenberater.de). The sources give no price.
Cost: no confirmed price.

Cracked cylinder head on the MR20
The MR20 head has thin walls and can crack (auto.ru). Cracked spark-plug wells can let coolant into the oil (zr.ru). Russian press calls the head replacement needed for valve or head damage very expensive, without giving a price. No mileage at failure is given.
Cost: no confirmed price.

Injector and HP pump wear
German sites name the injectors and the high-pressure pump as weak points on the 1.5 dCi (K9K) and the 1.6 dCi (R9M) (gebrauchtwagenberater.de, carwiki.de). On the K9K, worn injectors change the return flow and release metal chips. The chips damage other injectors and the pump. Check the return flows and the cylinder balance before replacing injectors (KFZ Dietrich, a Renault K9K engine page). The sources give no part number, mileage or price.
Cost: no confirmed price.

Clutch and second gear wear
The clutch wears often on manual cars. It lasts about 100,000-150,000 km, mainly worn by wheel-spin (zr.ru), and wears faster when towing (carwiki.de). On the 5-speed (1.6 petrol only), second gear is hard to engage because of a defective synchro ring (gebrauchtwagenberater.de, carwiki.de). Diesels at high mileage need a dual-mass flywheel, so budget for it (gebrauchtwagenberater.de). The sources give no price.
Cost: no confirmed price.

Tie rod ends and steering rack wear
Tie rod ends often wear loose early (gebrauchtwagenberater.de, carwiki.de, AUTO BILD). The front tie rods are typical on the first generation (AUTO BILD). The steering rack can need replacing at 60,000-100,000 km (auto.ru). It usually fails after the tie rods, and Nissan supplies it only as a full assembly (zr.ru). The sources give no price.
Cost: no confirmed price.

Recalls
| Country | Code | Years | What is done |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany and worldwide (press: AUTO BILD, carwiki) | Not given | Built 27 Aug 2010 to 18 Feb 2011 | The brake line from the master cylinder to the ABS may touch the CVT, wear and become porous. The workshop checks the line and replaces it if needed. No cost to the owner. |
| UK and worldwide (press: Auto Express, gebrauchtwagenberater) | Not given | Built 27 Feb to 16 May 2012 | The steering wheel hub can detach, and the steering wheel can come away. Fixed under warranty. |
Maintenance
- Engine oil: change every 10,000 km or less. Missed changes can damage the K9K turbo and bearings.
- CVT fluid: about every 30,000 km, the figure Jatco gives for heavy city use (zr.ru, auto.ru).
- 1.5 dCi timing: it has a timing belt, not a chain. The belt service usually includes the tensioner and water pump.
