At a glance

  • Years: 2021 on, hatchback and Sports Tourer. Facelift from 2026. Petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and Electric.
  • Safety: Four Euro NCAP stars in 2022, and no central airbag. Pedestrian detection was judged weak.
  • Reliability: 2/5. Several recalls since 2021, plus 12 V battery and infotainment faults.
  • DIY: 2/5. Most jobs need a dealer or a diagnostic tool, including the electric parking brake.
  • Prefer: a car with a VIN printout showing every campaign closed, and a full service history.
  • Avoid: a 1.5 diesel built up to January 2023 without chain-recall proof, and a 2024-2025 car with an open fuel-leak campaign.

Engines and gearboxes

  • Astra Electric, 156 PS (ZK02), single-speed: see 12 V battery and keyless starting.

Gearboxes:

  • Eight-speed automatic (EAT8 and e-EAT8): see Aisin EAT8.
  • Six-speed dual-clutch on the 48 V hybrid and seven-speed dual-clutch on later plug-in hybrids: two clutches that pre-select the next gear.
  • Single-speed reduction gear on the Electric.

Before you buy

  1. On a 1.5 diesel built to January 2023, ask for a VIN printout showing recall KUH is closed. A cold-start rattle or no proof is a bad result. No scanner is needed.
  2. Check the VIN for fuel-leak recalls KUU and KRX. A fuel smell, damp stains near the high-pressure hose or an open campaign is a bad result.
  3. Test keyless entry from cold and lock the car from a distance. A key that is not recognised, or an alarm that fires by itself, is a bad result. A battery tester helps; a scanner is needed if warnings are stored.
  4. Compare the speed-limit display with the signs. Check that the over-the-air update KWS is installed. No scanner is needed.
  5. Use the sat-nav and screen for the whole test drive. A freeze, a restart or a stuck parking beep is a bad result. Check the software version on the screen; no scanner is needed.

In detail

Diesel camshaft chain failure

The 1.5 diesel (code DV5R) has a 7 mm camshaft chain. Oil carbonisation and high contact pressure can weaken it. The chain can break and wreck the engine; the notice also warns of loss of control. The campaign covers cars built from 29 July 2021 to 31 January 2023, code KUH, 40,010 cars worldwide. The remedy is not stated. No price is confirmed.

Fuel leaks and fire risk

Two campaigns. KUU covers cars built from 2 January 2024 to 23 April 2025: the high-pressure hose can leak at loose nuts, and fuel can ignite. 138,445 cars worldwide. KRX covers cars built from 13 March to 12 November 2024: the low-pressure fuel line can rub on the ignition-coil screw and leak. 2,891 cars, Astra L and Grandland; the wording points to a petrol engine. Check both codes by VIN.

12 V battery and keyless starting

The 12 V battery runs the electronics. A weak one can cause starting faults. Keyless entry may refuse to open, open on its own, or fail to recognise the key; some cars then refuse to start. On the Electric, a weak 12 V battery has stopped the car in traffic with many warnings, while the traction battery was still charged. A dealer may find no stored fault. Test keyless from cold and load-test the battery. A scanner is needed if warnings are stored.

Wrong speed limit on the display

Traffic-sign recognition can show the wrong limit. Owners report 10 to 100 km/h in a 30 zone, or 50 km/h after leaving town. Recall KWS (KBA 16765R) covers cars built from 26 September to 10 December 2025. A too-early software change left the system incomplete: 5,525 cars in Germany, 7,612 worldwide. The fix is an over-the-air update that takes a few minutes. Owners also report the fault on 2024 and 2026 cars, outside the campaign. Check the software state.

Infotainment freezes and slow navigation

The Pure Panel screen and the digital cockpit can freeze and restart. One car froze twice, once with a parking-sensor beep that would not stop, and needed a lock and a control-unit shutdown. The sat-nav is slow, the map looks old, and menu swipes sometimes need several tries. Map updates are large: 17 GB in one car, 30 GB in another. A software update may help.

Check every campaign by VIN with an Opel dealer before you pay.

Maintenance

  • Load-test the 12 V battery at every service. A weak one can block keyless entry and shut down the Electric.
  • Check the VIN for open campaigns at every service; an Opel partner does the recall work.
  • On a 1.5 diesel built to January 2023, keep the chain-recall paperwork.
  • Keep the infotainment and assist software current. The speed-limit fix arrives over the air.
