At a glance

  • Years: built 2017 to 2022. The facelift was shown in December 2019 and sold from February 2020.
  • Most common: oil loss, a timing chain on the 1.6 diesel, and particulate filter faults on the diesels.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because oil loss and diesel faults recur, and the sources give few repair costs.
  • DIY: 2/5, because the chain job takes a garage about 2 days, and the diesel checks need a scanner.
  • Prefer: a car with a service record that shows oil checks. A petrol avoids the diesel particulate filter and chain faults.
  • Avoid: a diesel with a particulate filter warning light, and any car with oil on the ground or at the gearbox joint.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.5 Turbo petrol (LFV, 140 or 165 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.6 Turbo petrol (LWC, 200 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 Turbo petrol GSi (B20NFT, 260 PS): no fault of its own confirmed. Oil loss applies.
  • 2.0 Turbo petrol, facelift (LSY, 170, 200 or 230 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read. Oil loss applies.
  • 1.6 CDTI diesel (LXO, LVL, 110 or 136 PS): a timing chain that can stretch, and particulate filter blockage.
  • 2.0 CDTI diesel (D20DTH, 170 PS) and 2.0 BiTurbo (D20DTR, 210 PS): particulate filter faults.
  • 1.5 diesel, facelift (LXD, 122 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 diesel, facelift (LSQ, 174 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed manual: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed automatic (1.5 Turbo and 1.6 CDTI): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 8-speed automatic: no gearbox fault confirmed. Oil loss at the gearbox joint is in the table.
  • 9-speed automatic (facelift petrol): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • Twinster AWD (torque-vectoring rear drive on the GSi, BiTurbo and some Country Tourer): no AWD fault reported in the sources read.

Before you buy

  1. Timing chain (1.6 CDTI). Listen on a cold start and at idle. Bad result: a rattle at start-up or idle, or a crank sensor or injector fault code. Needs a scanner for the codes.
  2. Oil. Look for oil on the ground under the car and around the sump and the gearbox joint. Check the level between services. Bad result: oil on the ground, or a level that drops between services.
  3. Particulate filter (diesels). Ask how the car was driven. Bad result: a filter warning light, lost power, or a filter that needs forced regeneration. Needs a scanner.
  4. Brake discs. Check the discs for wear. Bad result: discs worn before the first inspection.
  5. Recalls. Enter the VIN in the Opel recall check and ask a dealer for open campaigns. Bad result: an open campaign from the list below.
  6. Infotainment. Test the screen, CarPlay and navigation on a full drive. Bad result: restarts, CarPlay drops or a crash.
  7. Interior. Drive over a rough road. Bad result: knocking from the dashboard or the doors.

In detail

Oil loss

Oil loss is named for the Insignia B by Autoplenum, several press sites and TÜV inspection data. Carwiki names damaged oil pan seals and leaks at the gearbox joint as causes. Oil can drop without a warning light, so check the level at every oil change. AUTO BILD's 2026 TÜV data, which covers both generations, says about one in ten cars aged 8 to 9 fails on oil loss, and about one in five two tests later. The sources give no mileage, fix or cost for the Insignia B.

Timing chain on the 1.6 CDTI

The chain on the 1.6 CDTI (LVL) can loosen and stretch. The first sign is a rattle at start-up or at idle, and a rattle when the load changes. Gebrauchtwagenberater reports the chain fault on the same engine in the Astra K. A garage blog on drive2 also reports crank sensor or injector imbalance codes and an engine warning light. The garage advises replacing the chain at about 150,000 km, or earlier when the rattle starts. The job takes about 2 days. The sources give no cost for the Insignia B.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF)

The particulate filter traps soot from diesel exhaust. It clogs when the car makes mostly short trips. The sign is sluggish performance, often with a warning light. KFZ Dietrich says a garage can clear it with forced regeneration through diagnostic software. A filter that is blocked for good needs cleaning or replacement. Regular motorway drives help it clean itself. The sources give no cost for the Insignia B.

Brake discs wear early

Brake discs wear faster than average. AUTO BILD's TÜV data says brake discs fail more often than the class average. dpa reports the newer model wears its discs early, at the first inspection. The fix is new discs. The sources give no cost.

Infotainment faults

The IntelliLink and Navi Pro systems restart on their own, crash, or drop CarPlay and Android Auto. Targeted software updates fixed these faults, according to KFZ Dietrich and Gebrauchtwagenberater. Test the screen and the phone link on a full drive. The sources give no price for the work.

Interior rattles

Rattles come from the dashboard and the doors. Carwiki names loose ventilation hoses behind the dashboard, and glued side sills on the OPC-Line and GSi that can loosen over time. AUTO BILD names a knocking dashboard and poorly fitted doors and windscreens. The sources give no fix or cost.

Recalls

Each row is one campaign, labelled by who reported it. No KBA page was read, so no recall is confirmed by an official source. Check the VIN for open campaigns.

Country Code Years What is done
Germany (German press citing KBA) not given 2.0 diesel, built Jul 2016 to Nov 2018 Fuel line can chafe on a clip; possible fuel leak and fire risk. Remedy not stated.
Germany (two press sites) not given 2.0 BiTurbo diesel, model years 2018 and 2019 Turbo can crack; oil can reach hot exhaust parts and catch fire. Workshop visit about 2.5 hours; repair not described.
Germany (two press sites; code from Auto Motor und Sport) 012223 Built 2018 to 2020 Brake force compensation can fail, lengthening the braking distance. Fix: reprogram the brake control module (EBCM).
Germany (two press sites); UK (Auto Express) not given Built Feb 2017 to Mar 2018 (Germany); UK list January 2019 Moisture can get into the central locking, with fault and fire risk. UK: water leaks can make the central locking fail. Remedy not stated.
Germany (CarWiki); UK (Auto Express) not given Not given (Germany); UK list September 2020 Fuel tank straps; about 200 owners. Check and fix in the workshop. UK: the fuel tank can work loose.

Maintenance

  • Oil: check the level at each oil change and between services. Oil loss can come without a warning light.
  • Diesel: drive the car on the motorway regularly so the particulate filter can clean itself. Short trips block it.
  • Timing chain (1.6 CDTI): a garage blog on drive2 advises replacement at about 150,000 km, or earlier when the rattle starts.
