At a glance

  • Years: built 2017 to 2022. The facelift was shown in December 2019 and sold from February 2020.
  • Most common: oil loss, a timing chain on the 1.6 diesel, and particulate filter faults on the diesels.
  • Reliability: 3/5, because oil loss and diesel faults recur, and the sources give few repair costs.
  • DIY: 2/5, because the chain job takes a garage about 2 days, and the diesel checks need a scanner.
  • Prefer: a car with a service record that shows oil checks. A petrol avoids the diesel particulate filter and chain faults.
  • Avoid: a diesel with a particulate filter warning light, and any car with oil on the ground or at the gearbox joint.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.5 Turbo petrol (LFV, 140 or 165 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 1.6 Turbo petrol (LWC, 200 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 Turbo petrol GSi (B20NFT, 260 PS): no fault of its own confirmed. Oil loss applies.
  • 2.0 Turbo petrol, facelift (LSY, 170, 200 or 230 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read. Oil loss applies.
  • 1.6 CDTI diesel (LXO, LVL, 110 or 136 PS): a timing chain that can stretch, and particulate filter blockage.
  • 2.0 CDTI diesel (D20DTH, 170 PS) and 2.0 BiTurbo (D20DTR, 210 PS): particulate filter faults.
  • 1.5 diesel, facelift (LXD, 122 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 2.0 diesel, facelift (LSQ, 174 PS): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed manual: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed automatic (1.5 Turbo and 1.6 CDTI): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 8-speed automatic: no gearbox fault confirmed. Oil loss at the gearbox joint is in the table.
  • 9-speed automatic (facelift petrol): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • Twinster AWD (torque-vectoring rear drive on the GSi, BiTurbo and some Country Tourer): no AWD fault reported in the sources read.

Before you buy

  1. Timing chain (1.6 CDTI). Listen on a cold start and at idle. Bad result: a rattle at start-up or idle, or a crank sensor or injector fault code. Needs a scanner for the codes.
  2. Oil. Look for oil on the ground under the car and around the sump and the gearbox joint. Check the level between services. Bad result: oil on the ground, or a level that drops between services.
  3. Particulate filter (diesels). Ask how the car was driven. Bad result: a filter warning light, lost power, or a filter that needs forced regeneration. Needs a scanner.
  4. Brake discs. Check the discs for wear. Bad result: discs worn before the first inspection.
  5. Recalls. Enter the VIN in the Opel recall check and ask a dealer for open campaigns. Bad result: an open campaign from the list below.
  6. Infotainment. Test the screen, CarPlay and navigation on a full drive. Bad result: restarts, CarPlay drops or a crash.
  7. Interior. Drive over a rough road. Bad result: knocking from the dashboard or the doors.
