At a glance
- Years: built 1991 to 1999.
- Biggest risks: rust in the body, the timing belt due at 90,000 km, and the VR6 timing chain.
- Reliability: 3/5, petrol engines are called reliable, but belt and rust work cost money.
- DIY: 3/5, aftermarket parts are cheap, but rust repair is body work.
- Prefer: a car with a timing belt record at 90,000 km and sound tailgate, sills and wheel arches. Avoid: rust in the tailgate, sills or wheel arches, and any car with no belt record.

Before you buy
- Timing belt: ask for a record that the belt, tensioner roller and water pump were changed by 90,000 km. A bad result is no record, or a car past 90,000 km with the original belt. The job costs 350 to 450 EUR (Germany, year not stated). The VR6 has a chain instead, so skip this item there.
- Rust: look at the tailgate, the lower A-pillars, the sills and the front wheel arches. A bad result is bubbling paint or soft metal.
- VR6 chain: on a VR6, listen for a rattle from the engine and ask for a record of chain work. A bad result is a rattle, or no record.
- Brake hoses: check each hose for cracks, swelling and leaks. A bad result is any porous or leaking hose.
- Power windows: test each window up and down, and the sunroof. A bad result is a window or sunroof that stops, slows or fails.
- Shift linkage: on a manual car, shift through every gear, including reverse. A bad result is gears that are hard to select or a loose gear lever.

In detail
Rust
Rust is a known body problem on the Golf 3. The tailgate is the classic rust spot. Doors and front fenders are weak spots too, often hidden under plastic trim. Check the lower A-pillars, the sills and the front wheel arches. Rust in a wheel arch can break through the outer panel and spread behind it. A wrong jack point can damage the sills. No repair price is confirmed.

Timing belt
The timing belt drives the camshaft. The VW interval is 90,000 km. A belt job costs 350 to 450 EUR in Germany, year not stated. The price includes the water pump and all tensioner and idler rollers. On the 2.0 16-valve engine a broken belt can damage the valves.

VR6 timing chain
The VR6 uses a timing chain, not a belt. The chain tensioner keeps the chain tight. When tension drops, the engine starts to rattle. Engine damage usually traces back to the tensioner. The chain sometimes breaks, and the camshaft sprockets can shear. No repair price is confirmed.

Brake hoses
The brake hoses are a weak point in every model year. They can become porous. Check each hose for cracks, swelling and leaks. No repair price is confirmed.

Power windows
Electric windows and the sunroof often fail. The window motors are the most common cause. No repair price is confirmed.

Shift linkage
The plastic parts of the shift linkage wear. The plastic bushings on the shift rods are a known failure point. The signs are a loose gear lever and gears that are hard to select. No repair price is confirmed.

Maintenance
- Change the timing belt and tensioner roller at 90,000 km, the VW interval. The quoted belt job includes the water pump and all rollers.
- Check the brake hoses for porous spots at each service.
- If a VR6 rattles, have the chain tensioner checked.
