At a glance
- Years: 2003 to 2015. Facelifts in 2006 and 2010. CrossTouran from March 2007 to August 2010.
- Reliability: 3/5. Breakdowns fall after 2006, but head and gearbox faults remain.
- DIY: 2/5. Timing, gearbox and head work need a workshop.
- Biggest risk: cracked cylinder heads on the 2.0 TDI (BKD, BMN), often announced by coolant loss.
- Prefer: cars registered from 2007 on. ADAC breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles fall from 40.8 (2007) to 19.5 (2015).
- Avoid: a 2.0 TDI that loses coolant with no leak found, and a 1.2 or 1.4 TSI with no proof that the timing chain and tensioner were replaced.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.2 and 1.4 TSI single-charged (EA111, from about 2010): see the 1.2/1.4 TSI guide. The timing chain and tensioner are the Touran's main petrol fault.
- 1.4 TSI twincharger (140-170 PS): no common fault confirmed for this engine on the Touran.
- 1.6 and 2.0 TDI common rail (EA189, from 2010): see the 2.0 TDI guide. The EGR valve is a known fault.
- 1.9 and 2.0 TDI pump-injector (up to 2010): injectors wear at high mileage, and the 2.0 TDI head cracks.
- 6-speed DSG 02E (wet clutch): a 2009 software recall covers 2008-2009 builds.
- 7-speed DSG DQ200 (dry clutch): see the DQ200 guide.
- Manual and 09G automatic: no common fault confirmed.

Before you buy
- Ask when the coolant was last topped up. Check the level on a cold engine. Coolant gone with no visible leak points to a head crack until a pressure test says otherwise. Bad result: coolant loss, and no pressure test on record.
- Drive from cold: pull away and shift through every gear. Judder or jerky shifts mean a DQ200 fault. A scanner check of the DSG adaptation values is the next step.
- For 1.2 and 1.4 TSI, ask for proof that the timing chain, tensioner and guide rail were replaced. Bad result: no proof, so price the job in.
- Ask a VW dealer to confirm the 2009 DSG software update is done. Bad result: no record.
- Check for rough idle or lost power on a diesel. Both are typical of a sticking EGR valve. A scanner reads the fault.
- On a pump-injector car with high mileage, ask for injector work records. Budget about 50,000 RUB per injector if none exist.
- After rain, check the footwell carpet and smell for damp. Look at the water box drains under the windscreen. Wet carpet means water in the footwell.
- Lift the car and check the springs, dampers and front wishbones. Broken springs, leaking dampers and rattling wishbones fail the TÜV.
- Check brake discs for cracks. A front brake job costs 510-650 EUR at a brand workshop in Germany (2026).

In detail
Head cracks in the 2.0 TDI
The 2.0 TDI cylinder head can crack. The usual first sign is coolant loss with no visible leak. It is known on the BKD engine from model years 2003 to 2007. Possible causes are a leaking EGR cooler, the head gasket and hairline cracks. No repair price is confirmed.

Pump injector faults
The pump-injector units of the 1.9 and 2.0 TDI, up to 2010, wear at high mileage. Press reports name frequent trouble with the pump-nozzle units and their elements. One injector costs about 50,000 RUB to replace (Russia, year not stated). ADAC breakdown data lists injector faults for 2010 to 2014 cars.

Timing chain on 1.2 and 1.4 TSI
The timing chain tensioner on the EA111 engines (1.2 and 1.4 TSI) can fail. The chain then stretches and can cause major engine damage. A worn tensioner can rattle on a cold start. ADAC's 2021 breakdown statistics name the timing chain as the main cause. Full detail is in the 1.2/1.4 TSI guide.

DQ200 gearbox faults
The DQ200 is a dry-clutch 7-speed DSG. Faults: jerky shifting, judder when pulling away, and frequent failures. The clutch wears fast in heavy city traffic or when towing. Russian press places most mechanical and mechatronic faults on cars built before about 2011 to 2012, and calls 2013 to 2015 cars more reliable. A reworked mechatronic (gearbox control unit) cost about 80,000 RUB in 2018. Full detail is in the DQ200 guide.

DSG 02E recall in 2009
ADAC lists an October 2009 recall of 17,000 vehicles with the 6-speed DSG 02E built from September 2008 to August 2009. The gearbox misreads its oil temperature. The fix is a free software update of about 30 minutes.

Water in the footwell
Water enters through blocked water box drains (the scuttle under the windscreen), porous rear door seals, and clogged sunroof drains. Leaves and dirt block the drains, and the water then pools. No repair price is confirmed.

EGR valve faults
A sticking EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve causes rough idle or lost power. ADAC breakdown data lists EGR faults for 2005 and for 2010 to 2014 cars. Russian press says the EA189 EGR valve fails sooner than the older engines' valves.

Springs, dampers and brake discs
On older cars, springs and dampers (shock absorbers) fail early. The TÜV also finds rattling front wishbones, worn strut mounts and oil leaks. Early cars, up to 2007, show porous rubber control-arm bushings and drive shaft problems. Newer cars show more brake disc problems, and discs crack more often. A front brake job costs 510-650 EUR at a brand workshop in Germany (March 2026).

Recalls
| Country | Code | Years | What is done |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany (June 2005) | Not given | Built 2004-2005 (2.0 TDI, 6-speed manual) | A flow restrictor is fitted to the clutch bleed valve to protect the dual-mass flywheel. Free, about one hour. |
| Germany (October 2009) | Not given | Built 09/2008 to 08/2009 (6-speed DSG 02E) | Free software update, about 30 minutes. |
| Germany (February 2018) | Not given | Built 03/2011 to 06/2011 (1.6 and 2.0 TDI) | Starter solenoid return spring replaced, free. |
Maintenance
- Check the coolant level at every service. Coolant loss with no visible leak is the warning sign of a 2.0 TDI head crack.
- Keep to the service intervals ADAC lists: 28,000 or 28,500 km at 24 months, and 56,000 km at 48 months or 60,000 km at 36 months.
- Clear the water box and sunroof drains of leaves and dirt. Blocked drains let water into the footwell.
