At a glance
- Years: 2016-2024, with a facelift in 2019-2020. Coupe, Sportback and Cabriolet, plus the S5 and RS5.
- Reliability: 3/5. The chassis and diesels hold up well, but oil use and electrical glitches come up often.
- DIY: 2/5. Simple checks are easy at home, but suspension and gearbox work needs a workshop.
- Prefer: the 2.0 TDI with a full service record.
- Avoid: a 2.0 TFSI with high oil use or no oil top-up records.
Engines and gearboxes
- 2.0 TFSI (EA888 gen 3, CVK, CYR, DDW, DKN, DMS, DLV, DMT; g-tron CVL, DRX): oil use is the main concern (see below). Water pump, turbo, oil leak and breather faults are in the 2.0 TSI guide. Two sites name stretched timing chains, mostly after about 200,000 km (Auto.ru, Gebrauchtwagenberater, which calls them rare).
- 2.0 TDI (EA288, DEU, DET, DTN, DTP): coolant, EGR, AdBlue and DPF faults are in the 2.0 TDI guide.
- 3.0 TDI V6 (CSW, CRT, DCP, DEW, DMG, DMK): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- S5 3.0 TFSI (CWG) and RS5 2.9 TFSI (DEC): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- 7-speed S tronic DL382: clutch wear, mechatronic faults, sensors and oil leaks are in the S tronic guide.
- 6-speed manual (and 7-speed on some facelift cars): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- 8-speed ZF 8HP (V6 cars): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
Known issues
| Issue | Affects | Typical km | Repair cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil consumption | 2.0 TFSI (EA888 gen 3), codes CVK, CYR, DDW, DKN, DMS, DLV, DMT, CVL, DRX | About 150,000 km (Auto.ru) | No confirmed price |
| Suspension wear | All models: front arms, stabilizer links, shock absorbers | From about 150,000 km (Kolesa.ru) | No confirmed price |
| Power windows opening on their own | All models, electrics | Not stated | No confirmed price |
| Infotainment crashes and phone links | All models with the infotainment system | Not stated | No confirmed price |
Before you buy
- Ask for oil top-up records and check the dipstick on a level surface with a warm engine. Oil use above 300 ml per 1,000 km needs a workshop check.
- Lift the car and check the front lower arm ball joints, stabilizer links and shock absorbers for play, leaks and knocks over bumps.
- Check the VIN in the official recall checker of your country. Ask the dealer for proof that open campaigns are done.
- Cars built 2016 to 2020: ask whether the belt starter-generator was replaced under the recall. Moisture can make it overheat.
- Use every window switch, and watch for windows that move on their own, especially when the indicator is used. CarWiki says a workshop software update fixes this.
- Pair a phone by Bluetooth and check the screen for flicker or restarts.

In detail
Oil consumption
Symptoms: the engine uses oil between services. CarWiki gives 50 to 250 ml per 1,000 km as normal and advises a workshop check above 300 ml per 1,000 km. One F5-era 2.0 TFSI (190 hp, 2017) used 550 ml between 56,000 and 58,200 km, according to CarWiki.
Cause: CarWiki links the problem to coked oil scraper rings on the 2.0 TFSI. Auto.ru names piston rings, a torn crankcase breather membrane and worn valve stem seals as causes on the EA888 gen 3b.
Which cars: 2.0 TFSI petrol engines. Fix: not stated. Cost: no confirmed price.
Sources: CarWiki, oil consumption, Auto.ru, A4 B9 common faults
Suspension wear
Symptoms: not stated. The parts wear with mileage. Kolesa.ru says the front upper control arms, stabilizer links and shock absorbers are the main wear items up to about 200,000 km. The front diagonal arm may wear first, around 150,000 km. CarWiki says springs and dampers become a problem at high age, and the wheel suspension is the main TÜV issue.
Cause: age and wear. Which cars: all models. Fix: replace the worn parts. Cost: no confirmed price.

Power windows opening on their own
Symptoms: windows open by themselves, sometimes at night (CarWiki). Auto Express names windows that open when the indicator is used as a common electrical glitch.
Fix: a workshop software update, according to CarWiki. It also gives a reset: close the doors, hold the up switch for at least five seconds, then hold the down switch for five more seconds. If that fails, disconnect the battery briefly.
Which cars: all models. Cost: no confirmed price.

Infotainment crashes and phone links
Symptoms: the infotainment system crashes (Auto Express). RAC Drive found phones that do not connect properly and screens that flicker, on the Sportback.
Cause and fix: not stated. Which cars: all models with the infotainment system. Cost: no confirmed price.

Recalls
| Country | Code | Years | What is done |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK, Austria | R/2020/138 (UK); not given (Austria) | 2016-2020 | Moisture can enter the belt starter-generator, causing local overheating and, in bad conditions, a fire. The unit is replaced. |
| UK | R/2019/175 | not given | The locking mechanism in the hinged towing bracket can be faulty. The hinge module is checked and replaced if needed. |
| UK | R/2021/204 | not given | The same towing bracket defect. The hinge module is checked and replaced if needed. |
| UK | R/2018/152 | not given | Moisture can make the additional coolant pump overheat and fail. The pump is replaced and the engine control unit software updated. |
| UK | R/2018/365 | not given | The passenger airbag module bolts may be under-tightened. The bolts are checked and replaced if needed. The repair is free. |
| UK | R/2020/302 | not given | The seat frame may not be bolted correctly to the rail. The frame is checked and replaced if needed. |
| UK | R/2021/236 | not given | The rear axle suspension link nuts do not meet specification. The nuts are replaced. |
| UK | R/2022/036 | not given | The rear toe and camber may be wrong after an earlier campaign. The alignment is checked and the suspension serviced if needed. |
GOV.UK lists the R/ rows under the A5 pages for 2017, 2018 and 2020 but shows no build years. The Austrian belt starter-generator recall lists model years 2018 to 2020.
Maintenance
- S tronic gearbox oil: change every 30,000 to 60,000 km. Friction debris damages the hydraulics (Kolesa.ru gives 30,000 to 50,000 km, Gebrauchtwagenberater 50,000 to 60,000 km).
- Check the engine oil level at every service and keep the records. Oil use is the main petrol-engine risk.
- After any rear axle work, check the wheel alignment (recall R/2022/036).
