The Dualogic gearbox is the main risk. Check its shifts first, then the TwinAir oil level, the clutch and the diesel's service history.

At a glance

  • Years: built from 2012. The facelift came in 2020.
  • Most common: the Dualogic automated gearbox shifts slowly or judders. The 0.9 TwinAir petrol uses oil and has valve-unit faults. The 1.3 diesel wears its DPF, EGR and turbo.
  • Reliability: 2/5, because the Dualogic gearbox and the TwinAir valve unit fail, and the clutch wears.
  • DIY: 2/5, because clutch and gearbox work needs a workshop. A clutch job takes about a working day.
  • Prefer: a manual car with a full service book. Avoid: a Dualogic car that shifts slowly or judders.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 0.9 TwinAir petrol (65 to 90 PS): the engine with the oil use and valve-unit issues below.
  • 1.2 FIRE petrol (69 PS): see the 1.2 FIRE guide. No Panda III-specific common fault confirmed.
  • 1.3 Multijet diesel (75, 80 or 95 PS): has a timing chain. Its DPF, EGR, turbo and flywheel wear are below.
  • 1.0 Hybrid petrol (70 PS): no common fault confirmed.
  • Manual gearbox: no gearbox fault confirmed. The clutch wears, see below.
  • Dualogic automated gearbox: a clutch and an actuator that shift gears for you. Its shifting faults are the first issue below.

Before you buy

  1. Drive off from rest and make several up-shifts. Shifts should be quick and smooth. Slow, late or jerky shifts mean a failing Dualogic actuator (the unit that moves the gears).
  2. Test the clutch on a steep hill or under hard acceleration. If the revs rise and the car does not speed up, the clutch is slipping.
  3. Ask for the diesel service book. Missed services raise the risk of DPF, EGR and turbo faults.
  4. Let the engine idle and listen for rough running or power that comes and goes. These point to the TwinAir valve unit.
  5. Check the oil level with the dipstick and ask for oil change records. Low or old oil is a warning sign.
  6. Drive over bumps and turn the wheel on full lock. Knocks, rattles or play mean worn track rods or springs.
  7. Check the battery and ask how old it is. A flat battery is a common breakdown.
  8. Ask the dealer to check the VIN for open recalls, including the 2023 reverse switch check.

In detail

Dualogic shifts and actuator

Dualogic is the automated gearbox: a clutch and gearbox that the car shifts through an actuator. Gear changes feel slow or late, mostly on up-shifts, and the car can judder. A press expert says that points to a failing actuator. A garage lists slow shifts and judder too.

Replacing the actuator is "very expensive". No price is confirmed. The garage checks the clutch wear and the Dualogic basic setting (a re-learn after work on the gearbox).

Diesel DPF, EGR, turbo and flywheel

On the 1.3 Multijet diesel, the typical wear is in the diesel particulate filter (DPF, soot filter), the EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation), the turbo and the dual-mass flywheel (a two-part damper between engine and gearbox). Owners report the same faults and a flywheel warning. Problems are less likely if services were kept on time. No cost or mileage is confirmed.

Clutch wear

The engine revs rise but the car does not speed up. The car judders, and gears are hard to engage from neutral. A burnt smell can come from the clutch. The clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing are replaced as a set, and the dual-mass flywheel should be checked too.

A clutch job costs 400 to 800 EUR in Germany (year not stated). The price depends on the engine, build year and workshop, and the job takes about one working day.

TwinAir valve unit

The TwinAir has a MultiAir valve unit. It is driven by oil pressure and controls the valves. A garage lists rough idle and power fluctuation as faults of this unit. The garage checks the valve timing values in the engine computer. A Motor-Talk reply says the unit reacts badly to old or wrong oil.

No repair price is confirmed.

TwinAir oil use

The 0.9 TwinAir uses oil between services, and the oil level falls. A garage calls higher oil use typical for this engine, and owners report the same. Check the oil level often, and use fresh oil of the right kind, because the valve unit reacts to old or wrong oil.

Springs and track rod ends

TÜV inspections flag springs, shock absorbers and track rod ends (the joints that link steering to the wheels) above average. Rattles and imprecise steering come from worn track rods and bearings. Check the steering for play and the wheel alignment.

Battery

Three press reports name the battery as the main cause of breakdowns in the ADAC breakdown statistics. Check the battery and ask how old it is.

Reverse switch recall

The reverse switch on the gearbox may be defective. If it is, the reverse lights, rear camera and rear parking sensors may not work. Cars built 29 March to 26 October 2023 are covered. The dealer checks whether the switch is from the faulty batch and replaces it if needed. The repair takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Maintenance

  • Engine oil: check the TwinAir oil level often. Use fresh oil of the right kind.
  • Diesel: keep the services on time. Missed services raise the risk of DPF, EGR and turbo faults.
