At a glance

  • Years: built 2014 to 2021. The facelift came in 2017.
  • Reliability: 3/5. The 1.2 petrol has oil use and chain problems, the CVT wears early, and diesel turbos and particulate filters fail.
  • DIY: 2/5. Chain, CVT and turbo work need a workshop. The basic checks need no tools.
  • Prefer: a car with full service records, proof of oil checks and, on a CVT, fluid changes.
  • Avoid: a 1.2 DIG-T (HRA2) with no oil or chain records, and a CVT with no fluid history.

Before you buy

  1. Check the oil level on a cold engine and again after a drive. Ask for records of every top-up. Heavy oil use on a 1.2 DIG-T is a bad sign.
  2. Ask for chain and tensioner records. Listen at cold start for a rattle from the front of the engine. A rattle that lasts after start is a bad sign, and a workshop must check it.
  3. Ask for CVT fluid change records, about every 40,000 to 60,000 km. On a test drive, feel for judder, humming or a delay before the car moves. A CVT with no fluid history is a bad sign. Reading CVT fault codes needs a scanner.
  4. Ask for service records and the history of the particulate filter. On a 1.5 dCi or 1.6 dCi built 2014 to 2016, ask about the soot sensor, which can clog. A scanner shows the soot and pressure values.
  5. On a diesel, blue or black smoke under acceleration, or an engine that will not rev above about 2,000 rpm, is a bad sign. A scanner shows boost faults. A turbo is replaced, not repaired.
  6. With the front wheels off the ground, rock each wheel and check the tie rods. Play means a repair is due. A knock over small bumps points to the steering rack bushing.
  7. Bounce each corner of the car. Knocking from the rear shock absorbers is a bad sign. Listen for a hub noise that changes with speed.
  8. Ask whether the battery was replaced, and when. A weak battery can disable stop-start and the electronic handbrake.
  9. Check every recall for the VIN with a Nissan dealer before you buy. The campaigns in the Recalls table are the ones to ask about.

In detail

Oil use and piston rings on the HRA2

The engine burns oil between changes, so the dipstick drops fast. Gebrauchtwagenberater and RAC both name large oil use on the 1.2 DIG-T. Russian press says the oil burn starts at small mileage.

The cause given is worn or faulty piston rings (gebrauchtwagenberater, t-j.ru). A garage that opened an engine found cylinder scoring, uneven bore wear, worn oil scraper caps and carbon on the valve lifters.

Warranty engine replacements do not help cars more than three years old (t-j.ru).

No confirmed price is given. Prevention: check the oil between changes. auto.ru advises an oil change every 7,000 to 8,000 km.

Timing chain rattle on the HRA2

The chain rattles or slaps at cold start or when the load changes. RAC reports rattling chains under acceleration. If the chain tensioner fails, the engine can be badly damaged (gebrauchtwagenberater).

The chain stretches from about 60,000 to 80,000 km (auto.ru), and sometimes nearer 100,000 km (zr.ru). A garage found wear marks on the front cover from the chain. The repair replaces the chain kit and the tensioner.

No confirmed price is given.

CVT wear and hydraulic block failure

The CVT judders or jerks, hums, and delays before it moves. Some cars grind or show speed swings (gebrauchtwagenberater). Overheating, dirty fluid, high loads, towing and hard driving speed up the wear (auto.ru).

On the 1.2 (JF015E), the belt and pulley cones wear first. On the JF016E and JF017E units (the 1.6 dCi uses the JF017E), the hydraulic block is the most common failure (zr.ru). The JF015E is reported to fail in large numbers between 50,000 and 150,000 km (zr.ru). Repair is expensive and sometimes impossible (zr.ru), and it does not always succeed (t-j.ru).

No CVT repair price in EUR or GBP is given in the sources read.

Turbocharger failure

Autocar reports turbo failures on the 1.5 and 1.6 diesels. The symptoms are a rough engine, no revs above about 2,000 rpm, and blue or black smoke under acceleration. The fix is a replacement. Gebrauchtwagenberater names the turbo as a diesel weak point at high mileage or on short trips.

No confirmed price is given.

Diesel particulate filter and soot sensor

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) clogs on diesels that do many short trips or run at high mileage (gebrauchtwagenberater). Autocar reports that the exhaust pressure sensor clogs with soot on cars built from April 2014 to May 2016. Autocar suggests an air-hose flush first, and a new sensor if that fails.

No confirmed price is given.

Steering rack and tie rod wear

Tie rods and the steering rack wear at 40,000 to 80,000 km (zr.ru). A knock over small bumps usually means the steering rack support bushing has worn. Less often, a steering shaft joint is worn. The fix is a rack repair with a new bushing (auto.ru).

No confirmed price is given.

Shock absorbers, bushes and hub bearings

Rear shock absorbers knock when they wear out early. Autocar says some owners had them replaced by dealers free of charge. Squeaks come from stabiliser bushings, struts and the silent blocks of the front control arm and subframe, and they are worse in cold weather (auto.ru). Hub bearings often fail before 100,000 km (zr.ru). The front shocks and hubs last to about 100,000 km, then fail (t-j.ru). An AUTO BILD inspection article names worn rear axle joints as weak points.

No confirmed price is given.

Battery failure

A weak battery can disable stop-start and the electronic handbrake (Autocar). RAC says Nissan had a well publicised battery problem. Early FIAMM batteries did not last long, and later VARTA batteries are described as more durable (gebrauchtwagenberater). The ADAC breakdown statistics name the starter battery as a cause in each year from 2016 to 2023.

No confirmed price is given.

Maintenance

  • Engine oil, 1.2 DIG-T: check the level between changes. auto.ru advises an oil change every 7,000 to 8,000 km.
  • CVT fluid: change every 40,000 to 60,000 km. The sources give that range.
  • Battery: ask when it was last replaced. A weak battery disables stop-start and the electronic handbrake.
