Check the oil level on a cold engine and again after a drive. Ask for records of every top-up. Heavy oil use on a 1.2 DIG-T is a bad sign.
Ask for chain and tensioner records. Listen at cold start for a rattle from the front of the engine. A rattle that lasts after start is a bad sign, and a workshop must check it.
Ask for CVT fluid change records, about every 40,000 to 60,000 km. On a test drive, feel for judder, humming or a delay before the car moves. A CVT with no fluid history is a bad sign. Reading CVT fault codes needs a scanner.
With the front wheels off the ground, rock each wheel and check the tie rods. Play means a repair is due. A knock over small bumps points to the steering rack bushing.
Bounce each corner of the car. Knocking from the rear shock absorbers is a bad sign. Listen for a hub noise that changes with speed.
Ask whether the battery was replaced, and when. A weak battery can disable stop-start and the electronic handbrake.
