At a glance
- Years: 2000-2006. The facelift arrived in 2003.
- Reliability: 3/5. Timing chains and the Easytronic gearbox wear early, and brake lines rust on early cars.
- DIY: 3/5. Most checks are simple; chain and Easytronic repairs need a workshop.
- Prefer: a car with a full service history.
- Avoid: Easytronic cars without clutch or actuator records, and 1.0 or 1.2 cars with a cold-start rattle.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.0 12V (Z10XE, Z10XEP) and 1.2 16V (Z12XE, Z12XEP): petrol timing chain, see Petrol timing chain.
- 1.4 16V (Z14XE, Z14XEP): oil pressure switch leak on Twinport cars from 2003; the Z14XEP also has the timing chain. See Oil pressure switch leak.
- Easytronic (5-speed automated manual): clutch and actuator wear, see Easytronic clutch and actuator.
- 5-speed manual (F13, F17): worn gear linkage, see Manual gear linkage.

Before you buy
- Timing chain: Listen for a metallic rattle from a cold start. A rattle is a bad result. Replacement 600-1,000 EUR (Gebrauchtwagenberater, year not stated).
- Easytronic: Drive it from cold. Slow shifts, jerking, a flashing F or no gear selection are bad results. Use a scanner; codes need a Tech2. Repair 300-700 EUR (Gebrauchtwagenberater, year not stated).
- Steering rack: With the engine running, turn the wheel while stationary. A knock or play is a bad result.
- Brake lines: Look at the steel lines above the fuel tank and along the floor. Heavy rust or damp patches are a bad result.
- Exhaust: Inspect the rear silencer and the pipe near the fuel filler neck. Rust holes are a bad result. Rear silencer about 225 EUR (Germany, 2003).
- Gear linkage: With the engine off, try first, second and reverse. A stiff or vague lever points to worn linkage. Repair 120-200 EUR (Gebrauchtwagenberater, year not stated).
- Oil pressure switch: Check the switch for oil mist or drips. Replacement 30-80 EUR (Gebrauchtwagenberater, year not stated).
