At a glance

  • Years: 2019 on. Facelift from late 2023. Petrol, diesel and electric (Corsa-e).
  • Reliability: 3/5. The timing belt in oil and several recalls count against it.
  • DIY: 2/5. The belt job needs the oil pan off, so use a workshop.
  • Prefer: a 1.2 petrol with proof of belt change, or a 2024-on 48 V mild hybrid, which has a timing chain.
  • Avoid: a 1.2 petrol with no belt record, and a 1.5 diesel built up to January 2023 with no chain recall proof.

  • Electric Corsa-e, 100 kW (2020-2024), 115 kW (from 2023), 207 kW (from 2026): single-speed reduction gear. No common fault confirmed.

Gearboxes:

  • 5- and 6-speed manual. No common fault confirmed.
  • 8-speed automatic (EAT8), fitted to the 74 and 96 kW petrols. See Jerky automatic gearbox when cold.
  • Dual-clutch automatic (two clutches that pre-select the next gear), fitted to the mild hybrids. No common fault confirmed.

Before you buy

  1. Ask for invoices showing a timing belt change with oil pan and strainer cleaning. With the oil filler cap off, a workshop can see and measure the belt; a swollen belt or debris in the oil is a bad result. A belt change costs about 600-1,500 EUR (Germany, 2025-2026). Keep the service invoices: Stellantis goodwill for belt damage needs proof of servicing to schedule with approved oil.
  2. On a 1.5 diesel built up to January 2023, ask for proof the camshaft chain recall was done. No paperwork is a bad result.
  3. Check the car by VIN for the oil cooling nozzle recall (EU code KQ9). An open campaign is a bad result.
  4. On the automatic, drive off with a cold engine. Jerky shifts, mostly from 1st to 2nd, mean a software update is due: 140-220 EUR (Germany, 2026, excluding VAT).
  5. On the diesel, watch for particulate filter or AdBlue warnings on the test drive. Cleaning the filter's pressure line costs 95-180 EUR (Germany, 2026, excluding VAT).
  6. On the test drive, use the screen and the instrument cluster. A freeze or restart is a bad result. A software update may fix it.

In detail

Timing belt that runs in oil

On the 1.2 petrol, the timing belt runs in engine oil. The belt swells, cracks and breaks up. Rubber debris blocks the oil pump strainer, oil pressure drops, and the engine can be wrecked. Debris can also weaken the brake servo, so braking needs more force. Problems often appear before 100,000 km. Short trips, which thin the oil with fuel, speed up wear. Late oil changes and oil without Opel's approval do too. The belt was revised during production.

A worn belt swells. A workshop can see it through the oil filler opening and measure its width with a simple gauge. The oil pan and strainer must be cleaned at every belt change. A belt change costs about 600-900 EUR, or about 1,000-1,500 EUR with pan cleaning (Germany, 2025-2026).

Stellantis offers goodwill for belt damage on the 1.2 petrol up to 10 years or 175,000 km, if the car was serviced to schedule with approved oil. Keep the invoices as proof. Details are on Opel's PureTech support page.

Diesel camshaft chain

The camshaft chain on the 1.5 diesel was built too thin on cars made up to 31 January 2023. It can tear or wear and wreck the engine. A recall in 2025 fits a stronger chain. Ask for proof the work was done. No repair price is confirmed.

Oil cooling nozzle damage

The oil cooling nozzles can be damaged. Then the crankshaft and pistons are not cooled, and the engine can seize. Oil can leak onto the exhaust, which risks a fire. This is a recall for cars built 2022-2024 (EU code KQ9). Check by VIN that it was done.

Jerky automatic gearbox when cold

The 8-speed automatic shifts jerkily when cold, mostly from 1st to 2nd. A software update or a reset of its learned shift settings often helps. Major damage is rare. Opel sets no fixed fluid interval; some workshops change the fluid at high mileage.

Costs (Germany, 2026, excluding VAT): software update 140-220 EUR; fluid change with level check 280-420 EUR.

Diesel exhaust filter and AdBlue

The 1.5 diesel has a particulate filter, which cleans itself by burning soot. Short trips can stop this, so warnings appear. AdBlue (a fluid sprayed into the exhaust to cut emissions) can also fault now and then. A pressure sensor on the filter often triggers warnings, and cleaning the pressure line often fixes them.

Cost: 95-180 EUR for pressure line cleaning (Germany, 2026, excluding VAT).

Infotainment freezes

The screen and the instrument cluster can freeze and restart. A software update may fix it, but updates do not always help.

Maintenance

  • Change the engine oil every 10,000-15,000 km or once a year. Use oil with Opel's current approval; the approved oil grade has changed several times.
  • Change the timing belt at 100,000 km or six years, whichever comes first. Have the oil pan and strainer cleaned at the same time.
  • Opel sets no fixed fluid interval for the EAT8 gearbox. Some workshops change it at high mileage.
