At a glance

  • Years: 2019 to today. The facelift came in 2023. The e-2008 is the electric version.
  • Reliability: 3/5. Several recall campaigns, and front suspension faults show up at inspections.
  • DIY: 2/5. Most fixes are dealer campaigns, and the e-2008 battery software needs a workshop.
  • Biggest risks: the diesel camshaft chain recall and the e-2008 battery control software recall.
  • Prefer: a car with recall campaigns closed by VIN and a service record. Avoid: an open campaign or knocks from the front axle.

Before you buy

  1. Ask a dealer to run the VIN for all open recall campaigns. Bad result: any open campaign.
  2. Ask a dealer to confirm the camshaft chain campaign was done. Bad result: an open campaign or no record. No scanner needed.
  3. Ask a dealer to confirm the battery control software was checked and updated. Bad result: no record of it. No scanner needed.
  4. Check the fuel tank campaign by VIN. Bad result: an open campaign.
  5. Check the 48 V starter generator campaign by VIN. Bad result: an open campaign.
  6. Check the brake valve campaign by VIN, and look for fluid stains around the valve block. Bad result: an open campaign or wet fluid.
  7. Check the urea injector campaign by VIN. A missing warning light does not prove the system is healthy. Bad result: an open campaign.
  8. Drive over speed bumps at walking pace and listen for knocks. Read the last TÜV report for suspension remarks. Bad result: knocks from the front or a suspension remark. No scanner needed.
  9. Sit in the driver seat with the steering wheel where you drive. Bad result: the small wheel hides part of the dials.

In detail

Diesel camshaft chain can break

The camshaft chain links the crankshaft to the camshafts. On the 1.5 BlueHDi, carbon from the oil and high pressure on the chain reduce its grip, and the chain can break. The engine then fails, and the car can lose control. The recall covers cars built from 6 December 2017 to 31 January 2023. Peugeot calls it code MXL, and about 239,511 vehicles are covered worldwide across several Peugeot models. The fix is a workshop campaign. The sources do not state what is done or what it costs.

Battery control software can cut drive power

A software fault in the traction battery control unit misreads cell voltage or battery temperature. The emergency system then cuts motor power, and the car stops. All cars in this recall were built in 2022. The recall lists 21,349 vehicles worldwide across the e-208, e-2008, e-Partner and e-Rifter. The German motor authority (KBA) says the software is checked and updated where needed. No price is stated.

Fuel tank can leak on facelift cars

The fuel tank may not be leakproof. Leaking fuel can catch fire from hot parts or sparks. The campaign covers 208 and 2008 cars built from 26 June 2023 to 8 April 2025, about 19,393 vehicles. Peugeot code MXH. Remedy not stated. Check the VIN with a dealer.

48V belt starter generator can catch fire

The 48 V starter generator is the electric motor-generator driven by the engine belt. Its terminal cover sits less than 10 mm from the petrol particulate filter pipe. Water can cause an electric arc, and the arc can start a fire. The recall covers 208 V2 and 2008 V2 cars built from 5 January 2024 to 10 January 2026, about 531,971 vehicles worldwide. Peugeot code M38. Remedy not stated.

Brake fluid can leak from the valve block

The brake valve block (EBS, the electronic braking unit) is cast in aluminium. The casting may not fully surround the valves, which can let brake fluid leak inside. The recall list shows the 2024 Peugeot 2008, with the entry dated 15 June 2025. No recall code is given. Remedy not stated.

Urea injector fault hides the warning light

The urea (AdBlue) injector can block. A software error in the engine control unit can stop the warning light from coming on when the injector fails. The car then emits more NOx with no warning. In the UK, DVSA recall R/2020/356 (manufacturer ref KEK) covers cars built from 8 October 2019 to 27 September 2020. The fix is an engine control software update. In the EU, the recall covers urea injector cars built from 7 February 2020 to 19 October 2022, codes MF6 and MYC. Remedy not stated.

Front suspension knocks and ball joint wear

The TÜV report 2026 says inspectors criticise the axle suspension ten times more often than the comparison group at the first inspection. Front left ball joints can buckle early. Owner logs describe knocks over speed bumps, a squeak when steering, and a hum from a front wheel bearing. The cause is not stated by a non-owner source. The fix is replacing the worn joint, stabiliser link or hub bearing. No price is given by a non-owner source.

Small steering wheel hides dials and hard menus

The small steering wheel covers part of the digital dials, so the driver has to look over the wheel. The menus are nested and not intuitive. The touch surfaces need the eyes off the road. This is a design trait of all cars, not a fault. There is no repair.

Maintenance

  • Timing: the newer Turbo 100 (1.2 PureTech entry petrol) uses a timing chain instead of a belt. Older 1.2 PureTech cars still have a belt, see the 1.2 PureTech guide.
  • Recalls: ask a dealer to run the VIN. Previous owners may not have known about a recall, so faults can stay unfixed.
  • e-2008: ask whether the battery control unit software was checked and updated.
