At a glance

  • Years: 2016-2024, with a facelift in 2019-2020. Coupe, Sportback and Cabriolet, plus the S5 and RS5.
  • Reliability: 3/5. The chassis and diesels hold up well, but oil use and electrical glitches come up often.
  • DIY: 2/5. Simple checks are easy at home, but suspension and gearbox work needs a workshop.
  • Prefer: the 2.0 TDI with a full service record.
  • Avoid: a 2.0 TFSI with high oil use or no oil top-up records.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 2.0 TFSI (EA888 gen 3, CVK, CYR, DDW, DKN, DMS, DLV, DMT; g-tron CVL, DRX): oil use is the main concern (see below). Water pump, turbo, oil leak and breather faults are in the 2.0 TSI guide. Two sites name stretched timing chains, mostly after about 200,000 km (Auto.ru, Gebrauchtwagenberater, which calls them rare).
  • 2.0 TDI (EA288, DEU, DET, DTN, DTP): coolant, EGR, AdBlue and DPF faults are in the 2.0 TDI guide.
  • 3.0 TDI V6 (CSW, CRT, DCP, DEW, DMG, DMK): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • S5 3.0 TFSI (CWG) and RS5 2.9 TFSI (DEC): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 7-speed S tronic DL382: clutch wear, mechatronic faults, sensors and oil leaks are in the S tronic guide.
  • 6-speed manual (and 7-speed on some facelift cars): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 8-speed ZF 8HP (V6 cars): no fault confirmed in the sources read.

Before you buy

  1. Ask for oil top-up records and check the dipstick on a level surface with a warm engine. Oil use above 300 ml per 1,000 km needs a workshop check.
  2. Lift the car and check the front lower arm ball joints, stabilizer links and shock absorbers for play, leaks and knocks over bumps.
  3. Check the VIN in the official recall checker of your country. Ask the dealer for proof that open campaigns are done.
  4. Cars built 2016 to 2020: ask whether the belt starter-generator was replaced under the recall. Moisture can make it overheat.
  5. Use every window switch, and watch for windows that move on their own, especially when the indicator is used. CarWiki says a workshop software update fixes this.
  6. Pair a phone by Bluetooth and check the screen for flicker or restarts.
