At a glance

  • Years: 2015 to 2022. The facelift came in 2019. The xDrive25e plug-in hybrid arrived in 2020.
  • Reliability: 3/5. Gearboxes, the xDrive coupling and the timing chain carry most of the risk.
  • DIY: 2/5. Chain, gearbox and xDrive work need a BMW-capable scanner and a workshop.
  • Prefer: a B48 20i or 25i with a full service record and proof of gearbox fluid service.
  • Avoid: a B37 diesel with no EGR or injector history, and a 7-speed dual-clutch car that jerks when pulling away.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.5 petrol B38 (B38A15A, B38A15F; sDrive18i): timing chain and carbon build-up are in the table.
  • 2.0 petrol B48 (B48A20A, B48A20B; 20i, 25i): the timing chain is in the table.
  • 2.0 diesel B47 (B47C20B; 18d, 20d, 25d): the EGR cooler, turbo, EGR valve, injectors and DPF are in its own guide. See the BMW B47 diesel.
  • 1.5 diesel B37 (B37C15A; sDrive16d): EGR, injectors and the VTG turbo are in the table.
  • Manual 6-speed: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 6-speed Aisin automatic (18i to 2017, 25e): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
  • 8-speed Aisin automatic (18d, 20d, 20i, 25i): harsh or delayed shifts are in the table. See the Aisin EAT8 guide.
  • 7-speed dual-clutch (18i and 20i from July 2017): take-up and clutch wear are in the table.
  • xDrive25e plug-in hybrid (220 PS system): no hybrid fault is confirmed.
  • xDrive (all-wheel drive): the rear coupling is in the table.

Before you buy

  1. Test-drive the 8-speed Aisin in stop-and-go. Bad result: jerks, a delayed 1-2 shift, or no fluid service record. A scanner shows the adaptations and fault codes.
  2. Listen for a metallic rattle after a cold start. A BMW-capable scanner reads codes P0008, P0016, P0017 and P0341. Bad result: a rattle, those codes, or no chain history after 100,000 km.
  3. Drive slowly from a stop. Bad result: a rough take-up, a delay before the car moves, or a warning. A scanner reads the clutch adaptation.
  4. Ask for the rear coupling oil and filter record. Bad result: no record, or no service in the last 60,000-80,000 km. A scanner reads the all-wheel control unit for faults.
  5. Ask for EGR, injector and turbo history. A scanner reads the EGR values. Bad result: a clogged EGR, a DPF warning, power loss or limp mode, or no work record.
  6. Check for rough idle and misfire on a cold and a warm start. Ask for fuel and oil history. Bad result: rough idle, misfire, or power loss.
  7. Ask a BMW dealer to check open recall campaigns for the car's VIN. Bad result: an open campaign on the EGR cooler or the rear lights.
