At a glance

  • Years: built from 2015. The facelift came in 2019. Sources give the end of production as 2021 or 2022.
  • Most common: a stretched timing chain on the 1.4 Turbo, coolant loss, and oil use.
  • Gearbox: the Easytronic automated gearbox gets the most complaints. Sources say avoid it.
  • Reliability: 2/5, because the chain, coolant and gearbox faults can each cost hundreds to thousands of euros.
  • DIY: 2/5, because the timing chain job needs special tools and many hours of labour.
  • Prefer: a car with a chain or coolant repair record and a clear oil history. Avoid: an Easytronic car with jerky shifts, and a car that loses coolant with no service proof.

Engines and gearboxes

  • 1.0 Turbo (LE1, 3 cylinders, 77 kW / 105 PS): no common engine fault confirmed.
  • 1.4 Turbo (LE2, B14XFT, 125 or 150 PS): the chain can stretch and coolant can leak. Check the chain record first.
  • 1.4 petrol without turbo (74 kW): no faults named in the sources.
  • 1.6 Turbo (147 kW / 200 PS): no faults named in the sources.
  • 1.6 CDTI diesel (95 to 160 PS): timing chain rattle, DPF blocking on short trips, and injector faults.
  • Facelift 1.2 Turbo (110 to 145 PS), 1.4 Turbo with CVT (145 PS) and 1.5 diesel (105 to 122 PS): the sources give power figures only. No fault data was found.
  • Manual gearbox, 1.0 and 1.4 Turbo: clutch wear can come early. A clutch replacement costs 680.75 GBP on average (UK, year not stated).
  • Easytronic automated gearbox: jerky, unreliable and expensive to repair. Avoid.
  • 6-speed automatic: stiff or jerky shifts are reported.

Before you buy

  1. Timing chain (1.4 Turbo). Listen for a rattle on a cold start. Bad result: a rattle, or fault codes P0016 or P0017 on a scanner. Needs a scanner.
  2. Easytronic gearbox. Test drive with pull-away and gear changes. Bad result: jerky or harsh shifts. A repair costs 1,000 to 3,000 EUR (year not stated).
  3. Coolant (1.4 Turbo). Check the coolant level when the engine is cold. Look for damp spots in the engine bay and for white exhaust smoke. Bad result: a low level, damp spots, or a temperature rise above 90 C. A water pump costs 250 to 1,000 EUR (Germany, year not stated).
  4. Timing chain (1.6 CDTI). Listen to a cold start and to idle. Bad result: a rattle. Ask for a chain check at about 150,000 km. A check after unexplained noise costs 100 to 280 EUR (Germany, year not stated).
  5. Injectors (1.6 CDTI). Check for rough idle and smoke. Bad result: a fault on a scanner or rough running. Each injector costs 200 to 600 GBP (UK, year not stated). Needs a scanner.
  6. DPF (1.6 CDTI). Ask how the car was driven. Bad result: a DPF warning light or lost power. Short trips only are a warning sign. A DPF repair costs 100 to 400 GBP (UK, year not stated).
  7. Oil use. Check the oil level and look for oil on the ground under the car. Bad result: oil low between services, or blue exhaust smoke. Above 300 ml per 1,000 km needs a workshop check. Cost not given.
  8. Brakes and lights. Brake discs wear faster than average, and inspectors often flag the front lamps. Bad result: worn discs or misaimed lamps. Fix these before the next inspection.
  9. Infotainment, camera and doors. Test the infotainment screen and the windscreen camera. On a Sports Tourer, check for water in the doors. Bad result: a failed screen, a misted camera, or damp in the door.

In detail

Timing chain stretch on the 1.4 Turbo

The 1.4 Turbo (B14XFT) timing chain can stretch. The first sign is a rattle on a cold start. Later the engine logs fault codes for the cam and crank timing (P0016 and P0017). A garage measures the timing angle. Plus or minus 2 degrees is normal at warm idle. At 4 to 6 degrees the stretch is starting. Above 8 degrees the fault stays. Some cars reach this below 100,000 km. The cost of the chain job is not given in the sources.

Timing chain rattle on the 1.6 CDTI

The 1.6 CDTI diesel has a timing chain, not a belt. The chain and its tensioner wear. Symptoms are a rattle at start-up or idle, and a rattle when the load changes. The engine can also show crank sensor or injector imbalance faults. A garage advises a chain replacement at about 150,000 km, or earlier when the symptoms start. The job takes about 2 days. A check after unexplained noise costs 100 to 280 EUR (Germany, year not stated).

Oil loss

Normal use is 50 to 250 ml of oil per 1,000 km. Above 300 ml per 1,000 km, a workshop should check the engine. Common causes are worn piston rings, a faulty crankcase ventilation, worn valve stem seals and a leaking turbocharger. Signs are oil on the ground after a short standstill and blue exhaust smoke. Chronic oil loss can stop the car passing its inspection. The cost is not given.

Coolant loss and water pump

The 1.4 Turbo can lose coolant with no visible puddle. The likely places are the water pump shaft seal, a brittle plastic thermostat housing, the coolant lines to the water-cooled turbo, and the expansion tank and its cap. The electronic thermostat can fail to close, which sets fault P0128. The water pump often fails by about 80,000 km. Symptoms are a low coolant level, a temperature rise above 90 C, white exhaust smoke, damp spots, and coolant in the oil. Costs: a water pump 250 to 1,000 EUR, a head gasket 580 to 1,580 EUR (Germany, year not stated).

Easytronic gearbox

Easytronic is an automated manual gearbox. Reviews call it jerky, unreliable and expensive to repair. The sources cover all Astra generations, not the K alone. The usual complaint is harsh shifting and poor dependability. A repair costs 1,000 to 3,000 EUR (year not stated). The sources advise avoiding this gearbox.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF)

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) clogs when the car makes mostly short trips. The sign is sluggish performance. A forced regeneration with a diagnostic tool often clears it, unless the filter is blocked for good. Regular motorway drives help the filter clean itself. A DPF repair costs 100 to 400 GBP (UK, year not stated).

Injector faults on the 1.6 CDTI

A failing injector causes rough idle and smoke. The engine can run unevenly. A new injector needs its quantity correction coded in. Each injector costs 200 to 600 GBP (UK, year not stated).

Recalls

No recall with a campaign number and build years is confirmed for this generation. Check the VIN with a dealer.

Maintenance

  • Oil: check the level between services. Normal use is 50 to 250 ml per 1,000 km. Above 300 ml, have a workshop check the engine.
  • Coolant: check the level when cold. A level below the minimum means a leak.
  • Chain: have the timing chain checked at major services, and at once if a cold-start rattle starts. A check costs 100 to 280 EUR (Germany, year not stated).
  • Diesel: drive the car on the motorway regularly so the DPF can regenerate.
