Before you buy
- 1.3 CDTI: Listen for a metallic rattle from the timing cover on a cold start. A scanner shows a timing deviation; above 2 degrees, repair is advised, above 3 degrees it is required. Chain kit 850-1,200 EUR (Germany, year not stated).
- Electric power steering: With the engine running, heavy steering or a steering warning light is a bad result. Use a scanner. Diagnosis 120-220 EUR; replacement and coding 480-780 EUR (Germany, year not stated).
- Ignition coil: Ask whether the ignition module has been replaced; it often fails by 60,000-80,000 km. About 10,000 RUB for a new module (Russia, year not stated).
- Easytronic: Drive it. Slipping, hesitant starts, rough shifts, or the car stuck in neutral with a warning are bad results. Ask for proof of clutch adaptation after clutch or actuator work.
- 6-speed manual: A hum from the gearbox at about 60,000 km or more is a bad result. Bearing repair costs 30,000-60,000 RUB (Russia, year not stated).
- 1.6 Turbo: Ask for proof of engine overhaul or piston work. Overhaul is due at 80,000-100,000 km. No confirmed price for the overhaul.
- Petrol timing chain: Listen for a rattle and ask for a chain replacement record. Chains last 90,000-120,000 km. Replacement about 10,000 RUB in parts plus labour (Russia, 2020).
- Steering shaft recall: Read the production code on the lower universal joint. Codes 20E4 or 20K3 mean the shaft must be replaced. Check takes about 10 minutes; replacement about 30 minutes.

In detail
Timing chain on the 1.3 CDTI
The chain on the 1.3 CDTI can stretch. Symptoms start from about 120,000 km. A metallic rattle from the timing cover, mostly on a cold start, is the warning sign. The fault code shows a mismatch between the crankshaft and camshaft signals. A garage advises repair above 2 degrees of deviation and requires it above 3 degrees. The repair covers the chain, tensioner and guide rails, usually with the cam belt. The chain kit costs 850-1,200 EUR (Germany, year not stated).

Turbo engine piston damage
The 1.6 Turbo (GSi and OPC) can lose pistons, mainly in cylinder four. Capital overhaul may be needed at 80,000-100,000 km. The Russian press links the failure to poor fuel, hard driving and overheating. Cylinder four has a higher cooling and oil-supply risk. A rebuild can use reinforced connecting rods and forged pistons. No overhaul price is confirmed.

Easytronic clutch and actuator
Easytronic is an automated manual: a manual gearbox with an electric clutch, not a real automatic. As the clutch wears, the grip point moves until the system cannot adapt. Actuator parts wear too. Symptoms are a slipping clutch, hesitant starts and rough shifts. The car can stay in neutral with a warning on the display. Adaptation (relearning clutch and gear positions) is needed after any clutch or actuator work, and it is lost after a voltage drop or battery change. The clutch lasts 80,000-100,000 km. A replacement actuator costs about 50,000-55,000 RUB (Russia, 2017 and 2020). A contract clutch unit costs 15,000-30,000 RUB (Russia, year not stated).

Electric power steering
Electric power steering uses a motor in the steering column. Faults are common, and the Russian press calls them mostly electrical. A garage quotes 120-220 EUR for diagnosis and 480-780 EUR for replacement with coding (Germany, year not stated). Use a scanner to read the fault.

Petrol timing chain
The timing chain on the 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 petrol engines is a known weak point. Chains last about 90,000-120,000 km. The tensioners can rattle. Short trips are said to stretch the chain early. Replacement costs about 10,000 RUB in parts plus similar labour (Russia, 2020).

Steering shaft recall
The German transport authority (KBA) warned that some steering intermediate shafts can break, which can make the steering fail. The warning covers Corsa D cars from model years 2006 to 2014. Replacement shafts with part numbers 13434280 (right-hand drive) and 13365907 (left-hand drive) were sold from February to September 2014 and fitted during steering repairs. Check the production code on the lower universal joint. Codes 20E4 or 20K3 mean the shaft must be replaced. The check takes about 10 minutes and the replacement about 30 minutes. No costs are given.

Ignition coil
The ignition coil block on the petrol engines often fails, usually at about 60,000-80,000 km. The fault shows up as ignition faults. A new module costs about 10,000 RUB (Russia, year not stated). Prices run from 3,000-4,000 RUB for a non-original part to 12,000-14,000 RUB for Bosch (Russia, 2020).

Manual gearbox bearings
The shaft bearings of the 6-speed manual (M20, M32; turbo and diesel) can start to hum. The hum often starts at about 60,000 km. Some last to about 200,000 km. The M32 has known bearing problems, and high preload can break its cone rollers. Repair costs 30,000-60,000 RUB (Russia, year not stated).
Recalls
| Country | Code | Years | What is done |

| Germany (KBA warning) | Not given | Corsa D 2006-2014; parts sold February to September 2014 | Check production code on the lower universal joint; 20E4 or 20K3 means replace |
Maintenance
- Change spark plugs every 30,000-45,000 km on petrol engines.
- After any Easytronic clutch or actuator work, have the clutch adaptation redone.
