At a glance
- Years: 2006-2014. Facelift cars from 2010.
- Reliability: 3/5. Timing chains and the Easytronic gearbox wear early, and the 1.6 Turbo can lose pistons.
- DIY: 2/5. Timing chain, clutch and steering module jobs need a workshop or coding.
- Prefer: cars with records of timing chain work and a checked steering shaft.
- Avoid: Easytronic cars with no clutch work on record, and 1.6 Turbo cars with no engine history.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.0 (Z10XEP, A10XEP): timing chain, see Petrol timing chain.
- 1.2 (Z12XEP, A12XER, A12XEL): timing chain, see Petrol timing chain.
- 1.4 (Z14XEP, A14XER): timing chain, see Petrol timing chain.
- 1.4 Turbo (A14NET): no common fault confirmed.
- 1.6 Turbo (Z16LE, Z16LEL, Z16LET, A16LEL; GSi and OPC): piston damage, see Turbo engine piston damage.
- 1.3 CDTI (Z13DTJ, A13DTC): timing chain, see Timing chain on the 1.3 CDTI.
- 1.7 CDTI: no common fault confirmed.
- Easytronic (automated): a manual gearbox with an electric clutch, not a real automatic. Clutch and actuator wear, see Easytronic clutch and actuator.
- 5-speed manual (F13, F17): no common fault confirmed.
- 6-speed manual (M20, M32): bearing hum, see Manual gearbox bearings.
- 4-speed automatic (AF13, 1.4 only): no common fault confirmed. Can reach 300,000 km.
Known issues
| Issue | Affects | Typical km | Repair cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Timing chain on the 1.3 CDTI | 1.3 CDTI (Z13DTJ, A13DTC) | From about 120,000 km | 850-1,200 EUR for the chain kit (Germany, year not stated) |

Before you buy
- 1.3 CDTI: Listen for a metallic rattle from the timing cover on a cold start. A scanner shows a timing deviation; above 2 degrees, repair is advised, above 3 degrees it is required. Chain kit 850-1,200 EUR (Germany, year not stated).
- Electric power steering: With the engine running, heavy steering or a steering warning light is a bad result. Use a scanner. Diagnosis 120-220 EUR; replacement and coding 480-780 EUR (Germany, year not stated).
- Ignition coil: Ask whether the ignition module has been replaced; it often fails by 60,000-80,000 km. About 10,000 RUB for a new module (Russia, year not stated).
- Easytronic: Drive it. Slipping, hesitant starts, rough shifts, or the car stuck in neutral with a warning are bad results. Ask for proof of clutch adaptation after clutch or actuator work.
- 6-speed manual: A hum from the gearbox at about 60,000 km or more is a bad result. Bearing repair costs 30,000-60,000 RUB (Russia, year not stated).
- 1.6 Turbo: Ask for proof of engine overhaul or piston work. Overhaul is due at 80,000-100,000 km. No confirmed price for the overhaul.
- Petrol timing chain: Listen for a rattle and ask for a chain replacement record. Chains last 90,000-120,000 km. Replacement about 10,000 RUB in parts plus labour (Russia, 2020).
- Steering shaft recall: Read the production code on the lower universal joint. Codes 20E4 or 20K3 mean the shaft must be replaced. Check takes about 10 minutes; replacement about 30 minutes.
