At a glance
- Years: built 2014 to 2021. The facelift came in 2017.
- Reliability: 3/5. The 1.2 petrol has oil use and chain problems, the CVT wears early, and diesel turbos and particulate filters fail.
- DIY: 2/5. Chain, CVT and turbo work need a workshop. The basic checks need no tools.
- Prefer: a car with full service records, proof of oil checks and, on a CVT, fluid changes.
- Avoid: a 1.2 DIG-T (HRA2) with no oil or chain records, and a CVT with no fluid history.
Engines and gearboxes
- 1.2 DIG-T petrol, HRA2 (115 PS, 2014-2018): oil use and timing chain faults, see the table.
- 1.6 DIG-T petrol, MR16 (163 PS, 2015-2018): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- 1.3 DIG-T petrol, HR13 (140/160 PS, 2018-2021): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- 1.5 dCi diesel, K9K (110/115 PS): turbo and particulate filter faults, see the table.
- 1.6 dCi diesel, R9M (130 PS, 2014-2018): turbo and particulate filter faults, see the table.
- 1.7 dCi diesel, R9N (150 PS, 2019-2020): no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- 6-speed manual, all engines: no fault confirmed in the sources read.
- CVT (Xtronic), with 1.2 and diesel engines: wear and hydraulic block faults, see the table.
- 7-speed dual-clutch (DCT), HR13 and K9K from 2019: no fault confirmed in the sources read.

Before you buy
- Check the oil level on a cold engine and again after a drive. Ask for records of every top-up. Heavy oil use on a 1.2 DIG-T is a bad sign.
- Ask for chain and tensioner records. Listen at cold start for a rattle from the front of the engine. A rattle that lasts after start is a bad sign, and a workshop must check it.
- Ask for CVT fluid change records, about every 40,000 to 60,000 km. On a test drive, feel for judder, humming or a delay before the car moves. A CVT with no fluid history is a bad sign. Reading CVT fault codes needs a scanner.
- Ask for service records and the history of the particulate filter. On a 1.5 dCi or 1.6 dCi built 2014 to 2016, ask about the soot sensor, which can clog. A scanner shows the soot and pressure values.
- On a diesel, blue or black smoke under acceleration, or an engine that will not rev above about 2,000 rpm, is a bad sign. A scanner shows boost faults. A turbo is replaced, not repaired.
- With the front wheels off the ground, rock each wheel and check the tie rods. Play means a repair is due. A knock over small bumps points to the steering rack bushing.
- Bounce each corner of the car. Knocking from the rear shock absorbers is a bad sign. Listen for a hub noise that changes with speed.
- Ask whether the battery was replaced, and when. A weak battery can disable stop-start and the electronic handbrake.
- Check every recall for the VIN with a Nissan dealer before you buy. The campaigns in the Recalls table are the ones to ask about.
