At a glance
- What it is: BMW's Steptronic. A torque-converter automatic (not a dual-clutch), built by ZF since 2009. Three generations so far: 8HP45 and 8HP70 first, 8HP50 and 8HP75 second, 8HP51 and 8HP76 from 2018.
- Main faults: harsh or delayed shifts from old fluid, valve body and solenoid wear, torque converter shudder, and clutch packs that burn after overheating. Oil leaks from the wiring sleeve and the pan also come up.
- Reliability: 3/5, because the design is sound but the faults are costly and mostly follow skipped fluid changes.
- DIY: 2/5, because the fluid level is set at a fixed temperature and every repair needs a BMW-capable scanner and an adaptation reset.
- Buy: a car with proof of fluid and filter changes and a clean scan. Avoid: one that shudders, jerks on cold shifts, or shows a gearbox warning or limp mode.
Known issues
| Issue | Affects | Typical km | Repair cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harsh, delayed or jerky shifts | All 8HP cars, worst with old fluid | 60,000 to 120,000 km | 350 to 650 USD fluid service (US, 2026) |
| Valve body and solenoid faults | All 8HP cars | 100,000 to 200,000 km without fluid changes | 1,800 to 2,800 USD mechatronic exchange (US, 2026) |
| Clutch packs and bushings wear | All 8HP cars, worst on first-generation 8HP45 and 8HP70 | Not stated | No confirmed price |
| Torque converter shudder | All 8HP cars | 180,000 to 300,000 km | No confirmed price |
| Connector sleeve leak | All 8HP cars | About 129,000 to 209,000 km | 700 to 1,500 USD sleeve seal repair (US, 2026) |
| Oil pan, filter and cooler-line leaks | All 8HP cars | From 150,000 km | No confirmed price; the pan comes with the oil service |
Before you buy
- Read the gearbox fault memory with a BMW-capable scanner. Bad result: pressure or solenoid codes such as 4F84, 4F87, P189C or P0748, or a past limp mode.
- Ask for fluid and filter invoices. Bad result: no fluid change by 80,000 to 120,000 km, or a change without an adaptation reset.
- Drive the car from cold and select Drive and Reverse. Bad result: a hard 1-2 shift, or a delay of 1-3 seconds before the gear engages.
- Drive 15 minutes in town, then under load. Bad result: jerky 2-3 shifts, flaring, slipping or a burnt smell.
- Hold a steady light throttle at low speed. Bad result: a shudder or vibration, which points to the torque converter lock-up clutch.
- Look under the car on a lift. Bad result: oil at the wiring connector on the case, on the plastic pan or on the cooler lines.

In detail
Harsh, delayed or jerky shifts
Symptoms. Cold start groan, slow or hanging cold shifts, jerks when warm on 1-2 and 2-3, a 1-3 second delay when selecting Drive or Reverse, and a kick when pulling away.
Cause. Old fluid and worn adaptation values. The gearbox learns the shifts from the fluid and the clutches. When the fluid degrades, the shifts land hard. Oil degrades from 60,000 to 80,000 km, faster in hot traffic.
Which cars. All 8HP cars.
Fix. Drain and fill with ZF LifeGuard Fluid 8 and change the filter with the pan. Then reset the adaptation values and drive a relearn cycle. The relearn needs warm fluid, at least 55 C. A reset alone does not relearn. Expect 2-3 hours of adaptation work.
Cost. Russia: ATF change from 4,990 RUB (year not stated) to 9,500 RUB (2026). Adaptation is included in repair prices. US: 350 to 650 USD (2026). Germany: no confirmed price.

Valve body and solenoid faults
Symptoms. Rough or harsh shifts, a delay before a gear engages, repeated limp mode, a transmission warning on the iDrive screen, and fault codes such as 4F84 and 4F87 for pressure, or P189C and P0748 for solenoids.
Cause. The mechatronic unit (the control unit and valve block) in the gearbox wears. Solenoids clog with debris, and valve channels wear. Overheating can make solenoids stick. A cold 1-2 jerk often comes from a clogged solenoid.
Which cars. All 8HP cars. Worn parts appear after 130,000 to 160,000 km without fluid changes, or 100,000 to 200,000 km without an ATF change.
Fix. Replace the solenoids or repair the board, or repair the valve body with reamed channels and oversize valves. The adaptation must be redone after any replacement, with BMW ISTA or an equivalent.
Cost. Russia: solenoid replacement from 18,000 RUB, board repair from 25,000 to 28,000 RUB, a used unit from 48,000 RUB, and a complete replacement from 60,000 to 120,000 RUB (2026 and year not stated). US: mechatronic exchange 1,800 to 2,800 USD, full rebuild 3,500 to 5,500 USD (2026). Dealer work costs 30 to 60% more. Germany: no confirmed price.

Clutch packs and bushings wear
Symptoms. Jerks on 2-3, a burnt smell, a pressure error, slipping under load, and a hum or vibration when pulling away.
Cause. Heat. In traffic or hard driving, the oil reaches 110 to 130 C. That burns the friction packs and makes the valves stick. Worn pump and converter bushings then add vibration. Planetary parts made of aluminium are weak under high load.
Which cars. All 8HP cars. The first-generation 8HP45 and 8HP70 suffer most, according to one shop report. Later 8HP75 and 8HP90 have better cooling.
Fix. An overhaul. Friction discs, gasket set, bushings and the solenoid set are replaced. Restore the valve body and use the correct fluid. A 0.3 litre error in the fill level matters, so set it exactly.
Cost. Russia: friction pack replacement from 30,000 RUB; overhaul from 15,000 to 80,000 RUB (2026 and year not stated). Germany and the US: no confirmed price.

Torque converter shudder
Symptoms. A shudder or vibration at a steady low speed, often in one speed window, and a shake through the body on slow or hard acceleration.
Cause. The lock-up clutch in the torque converter wears. Its debris clogs the solenoids and causes judder. If it is ignored, debris destroys the oil pump bearing and housing.
Which cars. All 8HP cars. Repair is typically due from 180,000 km, and up to about 300,000 km.
Fix. Refurbish or replace the converter, change the fluid and the filter, and flush the lines if the debris is in them. ZF sells torque converter replacement as part of its 8HP service kits.
Cost. No confirmed price.

Connector sleeve leak
Symptoms. Shift faults that come and go, gear codes, and oil around the gearbox connector. The first sign can look like a pan leak.
Cause. The sleeve carries the wiring harness out through the case wall. Its seal ages with heat, so ATF leaks past it and wicks into the electrical connector. The contacts then fail.
Which cars. All 8HP cars. The seal commonly fails between 80,000 and 130,000 miles (about 129,000 to 209,000 km).
Fix. Replace the sleeve seal, or the connector sleeve (part number 0501220929). Check the wiring for oil contamination.
Cost. US: 700 to 1,500 USD at a ZF-authorised independent (2026). Russia and Germany: no confirmed price.

Oil pan, filter and cooler-line leaks
Symptoms. Oil on the underside of the gearbox, around the pan, or on the cooler lines.
Cause. The pan is plastic and holds the filter. The pan gasket and cooler-line O-rings harden with heat and leak. The filter cannot be changed on its own, so the whole pan is replaced.
Which cars. All 8HP cars. Pan gasket leaks are typical from 150,000 km.
Fix. Fit a new plastic pan with the integrated filter, seal and plug. Tighten the pan bolts crosswise from the middle outward. The filter-pan part number is 1087298437. Replace the O-rings on the cooler pipes.
Cost. No confirmed price for the pan alone. It is part of the oil service (see the first issue above).

Recalls
No recall or service campaign for the 8HP is stated by the sources. Check open campaigns for your VIN with a BMW dealer before buying.
Maintenance
- Fluid and filter. Change every 80,000 to 120,000 km or 8 years, whichever comes first. Shops recommend 50,000 to 60,000 km in city traffic or hard use. BMW's "lifetime fill" is not a service plan. Use ZF LifeGuard Fluid 8.
- Pan and filter. Replace the pan and filter as one unit. Do not use a machine flush without dropping the pan. Do not use a universal ATF.
- Fill level. Set the level at 40 to 50 C with the gearbox cycled through all gears, then top up.
- After any service or repair. Reset and relearn the adaptation values, or the shifts can stay harsh.
